2 November: International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists

The International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists was observed globally on 2 November 2016. The Day is celebrated to spread awareness against the violence and crimes done to journalists and media workers and to bring to justice perpetrators of crimes against journalists and media workers, and ensure that victims have access to appropriate remedies. It aims to promote a safe and enabling environment for journalists to perform their work independently and without undue interference.


India-Bangladesh joint military exercise SAMPRITI-2016 to commence from 05 Nov

The joint military training exercise “Sampriti-2016” will be conducted between India and Bangladesh at Tangail, Dhaka, Bangladesh from 05 to 18 November 2016. Exercise SAMPRITI is an important bilateral defence cooperation endeavour between India and Bangladesh and will be the sixth edition of the exercise which is hosted alternately by both countries.


PM gives away Ramnath Goenka Awards for Excellence in Journalism

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has presented the Ramnath Goenka Awards for Excellence in Journalism at a function in New Delhi. The honour acknowledges exceptional work across 28 categories in print, broadcast and online journalism in English, Hindi and regional languages. The Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards, the biggest annual event in the Indian media calendar, was instituted by the Ramnath Goenka Foundation in 2005 to celebrate the legacy of the founder of The Indian Express Group. It recognises excellence in journalism and showcases outstanding contributions by individuals each year. In both the size of the award and its scope, these are the largest news media awards in the country. With this year, over 300 journalists from over 50 news organisations – domestic and international – have received these awards. Its categories cover investigative, political and sports journalism, non-fiction writing, feature writing, sports and entertainment, commentary and work done in regional languages.


ICICI Bank launches overdraft facility for salaried home loan borrowers

ICICI Bank has launched a credit facility against home loans for salaried customers. The Home Overdraft facility will enable a salaried customer to seek loans up to Rs. 1 crore for personal needs against his/her property. Salaried individuals, who have a home loan and a salary account with ICICI Bank, are eligible to apply for the ‘Home Overdraft’ facility. Also, salaried borrowers of preferred corporates who do not have home loans with ICICI Bank can transfer their home loans to the bank to avail themselves of this service.


Australia announces 19 grants worth $6.3 million for projects with India

In a bid to boost ties with India, the Australian government on 02nd November 2016 has announced 19 grants worth $6,30,000 dollars for several projects in the field of education, science, sports, arts and culture. The successful grants include an exchange between TAFE NSW and India’s Centurion University to share expertise for training indigenous learners, collaboration between University of New South Wales and Indian scientists to develop effective new water purification systems for the country’s water supply.


Pratul Joshi wins Bahrain International Challenge badminton tournament

Indian shuttler Pratul Joshi has won the Bahrain International Challenge badminton tournament in the men’s singles category. It was his maiden international title. In the final match played at Segayya in Bahrain, Pratul defeated his brother Aditya Joshi by 21-17, 12-21 and 21-15 score.
Women’s singles title: It was won by Sri fatmawati of Indonesia. She defeated her compatriot Asty Dwi Widyaningru.
Men’s doubles title: It was won by Russian pair of Evgenij Dremin and Denis Grachev. They defeated Indian pair of Vighnesh Devlekar and Rohan Kapoor by 18-21, 17-21 score.
Women’s doubles title: It was won by Tanisha Crasto (Bahrain) and Aprilsasi Lejarsar Variella (Indonesia). They defeated Indian pair of Farha Mather and Ashna Roy by 12-21 18-21 score.
