3 December: International Day of Persons with Disabilities

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) 2016 was observed across the world on 3 December 2016. The theme for the day was Achieving 17 Goals for the Future We Want. In 2016, the goal of the IDPD is assessing the current status of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and SDGs. The day also looks forward for laying the foundation for a future of greater inclusion for persons with disabilities.The observance of the 2016 International Day of Persons with Disabilities coincides with the 10-year anniversary of the adoption of the CRPD.The CRPD is one of the most quickly and widely ratified international treaties put forth by the United Nations till now.


RBI defers mandatory deployment of PoS devices till June

The RBI deferred the mandatory implementation of Aadhar-enabled Point of Sale (PoS) machines by six months, saying there is currently a limited capacity to produce such devices.The time for deployment of Aadhaar-enabled devices has been extended till June 30, 2017.The instructions contained in our circular of September 29, 2016, are for deployment of new card acceptance infrastructure.As regards enablement of existing card acceptance infrastructure for processing payment transactions using Aadhaar-based biometric authentication, the timeline will be advised in due course. On September 29, RBI had issued a circular saying Aadhar-enabled PoS devices were to be mandatorily installed by January 2017.


RBI to introduce new 20 & 50 rupee currency notes

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is going to issue new currency notes of Twenty and Fifty rupees denomination in the Mahatma Gandhi Series-2005. All old the previous currency notes of old Rs. 20 and Rs. 50 denomination issued by the Bank will continue to be legal tender.The 50 rupees note will be without inset letter in both the number panels. The 20 rupees note will be with inset letter ā€˜Lā€™ in both the number panels. Both notes will bear signature of incumbent RBI Governor Dr. Urjit R Patel. The year 2016 will be printed on the reverse of both the notes.


Hailakhandi first in Assam to pay tea workers via bank account

Hailakandi has become the first district in Assam to pay wages to tea garden workers through individual bank accounts before the December 15 deadline set by the state government for cashless transactions to the plantation workers.At least 504 workers of Burnie Braes tea estate received their wages through bank accounts and the payment was made through five Banking Correspondents (CSPs) of Assam Gramin Vikash Bank.Such payments were possible due to the effort of district Deputy Commissioner Moloy Bora, who held a series of meetings with bankers, tea garden managements and mobile service providers.


Indian contestant Srinidhi Shetty wins Miss Supranational

India’s representative Srinidhi Shetty has been crowned Miss Supranational 2016, an international beauty pageant. This marks the second time that India has won the pageant following the win by Asha Bhat in 2014. Srinidhi Shetty qualified for the competition after becoming the first runner-up at the Miss India Universe pageant earlier this year, where she won the title ‘Miss Diva Supranational’.


Elon Musk named most admired leader in technology

Tesla and SpaceX Founder Elon Musk has been named the most admired leader in the technology space, in a survey conducted by VC firm First Round Capital involving over 700 startup founders. Amazon’s Jeff Bezos emerged as the second most admired technology leader, followed by Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Apple’s Steve Jobs.
