India rises to second place in global business optimism index

The latest Grant Thornton International Business Report for the July-September quarter has placed India 2nd on the global scale for business optimism. During the April-June 2016 period, India was ranked at the 3rd position after being on top for two consecutive quarters. Indonesia took the top spot, with the Philippines coming in third. India was ranked third during the April-June period after being on top for two consecutive quarters. India regained its top position on this parameter, from second position in the April-June period, while profitability expectations also moved up.


PM Inaugurates 1st Intl Agro-biodiversity Congress

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first International Agro-biodiversity Congress in New Delhi. The 4-day Congress (from November 6 to 9, 2016) will be attended by 900 delegates from 60 countries to discuss conservation of genetic resources. The conference has been organised by the Indian Society of Plant Genetic Resources and Biodiversity International, a CGIAR Research Centre headquartered in Rome, Italy. It will address the threats imposed by climate change and ways to achieve sustainable agriculture production. It may adopt ‘Delhi Declaration on Agrobiodiversity management and use’. India is one of the most diverse countries in the world possessing unique crop and animal diversity. It covers only 2.4% of the world’s land area and yet it harbours 7-8% of all recorded species, including over 45,000 species of plants and 91,000 species of animals.


RBI appoints M Rajeshwar Rao as Executive Director

The Reserve Bank (RBI) has appointed M Rajeshwar Rao as Executive Director following G Mahalingam’s voluntary retirement from the central bank. As Executive Director, Rao will look after Department of Statistics and Information Management, Financial markets Operations Department and International Department. Prior to taking over as the Executive Director, he was the Chief General Manager, Financial Markets Operations Department. Rao has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a Master of Business Administration from University of Cochin. He is also a Certificated Associate of Indian Institute of Bankers. Rao joined RBI in 1984 and as career central banker has exposure in various aspects of central bank functioning.


Vice President Releases Throor book ‘An Era of Darkness: British Empire in India’

Vice President of India, M. Hamid Ansari released book ‘An Era of Darkness: The British Empire in India’ authored by Dr. Shashi Tharoor, the Lok Sabha MP. The book recalls in some detail the misdeeds of the British in looting India and making it suffer an agonizing and violent death. In it, author has rightly points out that British rule in India was effectively and regularly supplemented by famine, forced migration and brutality – the three examples of why British rule over India was despotic and anything but enlightened.


Petra Kvitova wins 2016 WTA Elite Singles Trophy

Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova on 6 November 2016 won the 2016 WTA Elite Singles Trophy. She defeated Ukrainian Elina Svitolina 6-4, 6-2 to grab the title at Zhuhai, China. Kvitova got off to a slow start in the first set but was able to get back into it midway through. She jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the second set and Svitolina was unable to climb back into the set. Venus Williams was the defending champion for the title. However, she chose not to participate despite qualifying for the edition.
