Azim Premji, Shiv Nadar in Forbes list of 100 richest tech tycoons

Wipro Chairman Azim Premji and HCL co-founder Shiv Nadar are the only two billionaires from India in Forbes’ list of the world’s 100 richest people in technology, ranking in the top 20 ahead of Google boss Eric Schmidt and Uber CEO Travis Kalanick. The ‘100 Richest Tech Billionaires In The World 2016’ list has been topped by Microsoft founder Bill Gates with an estimated fortune of $78 billion. Premji ranks 13th on the list with a networth of $16 billion and Nadar comes in on the 17th spot with $11.6 billion of net worth. The other Indian-American technology czars in the list are Symphony Technology Group CEO Romesh Wadhwani and founders of IT consulting and outsourcing company Syntel Bharat Desai and his wife Neerja Sethi.


Lok Sabha passes Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2016

The Lok Sabha has passed the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill 2016 to pave the way for employers in the textile sector to avail of the income tax benefit. The Bill seeks to amends the Income Tax Act (IT), 1961 and the Customs Tariff Act, 1975. These changes are explained below. It will provide income tax benefit to employers in the textile sector on additional employment provided the employee has worked for 150 days and not 240 days as mandated earlier.


CCEA gives nod to development of AUSC technology for thermal power plants

The CEEA (Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs) has given its approval for the development of AUSC (Advanced Ultra Super Critical) technology for thermal power plants. In this regard, CCEA has approved a one-time grant of 900 crore rupees spread over three years for an R&D project for the development of AUSC technology for thermal power plants. The project was proposed by a consortium of three government entities to reduce coal consumption as well as Carbon di-oxide (CO2) emission. They are Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), Indira Gandhi Centre of Atomic Research (IGCAR) National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC).


Airtel launches 4G services in Kharagpur

Bharti Airtel, the country’s largest telecommunication services provider, has launched 4G services in Kharagpur. Kharagpur is the second city in West Bengal to have 4G services. Airtel 4G is available to customers across a range of smart devices, including mobile phones (SIM cards), 4G hotspots and dongles. It has been rolled out using dual spectrum bands of 2,300 MHz (TD LTE) and 1,800 MHz (FD LTE). Airtel had launched the country’s first 4G network in Kolkata in April 2012.


Women’s safety app ‘I Feel Safe’ launched in DU

A mobile application “I Feel Safe” aimed at helping women ensure their safety in the national capital was launched at Delhi University. The mobile app, powered by Nirbhaya Jyoti Trust, is a personal safety application for smartphone users developed in association with Mobile Standards Alliance of India. The app instantly adds a virtual panic button. Mobile phone owners can simply press the “Safety Ka Power Button” five times to activate an alarm. The app does not need to be invoked for the safety alarm feature to work and works even if the screen of the phone is locked, the SIM card has been removed, no Wi-Fi networks are available and without the need to subscribe to a data plan. It places an automatic call to the national emergency number 100 and the location of the potential victim is tracked every 30 seconds and made available to their emergency contacts, emergency call centre team, who then reach out to provide support, to overcome the emergency situation.


Bill Maris, the CEO and founder of Google Ventures quits

Bill Maris, the chief executive, and founder of Alphabet Inc’s , venture capital arm of GV, is leaving the company. Maris, who will leave on Friday, will be replaced by GV managing partner David Krane. GV, previously known as Google Ventures, was founded in 2009 and has invested in more than 300 companies from life science, healthcare, artificial intelligence, robotics, transportation, cyber security, and agriculture, and more.
