Thomas Kurian Is New Oracle President
Oracle Corporation has elevated Thomas Kurian, executive vice-president, product development, to the role of president. Thomas Kurian thus became perhaps the single most senior executive in the company after co-CEOs Safra Catz and Mark Hurd. He had joined the $38 billion Oracle in 1996, was executive VP (product development). He is originally from Kerala an alumnus of Bengaluru’s St Joseph’s Boys High School. He holds a BA in electrical engineering from Princeton University, where he graduated summa cum laude (highest distinction). He has an MBA from Stanford University where he was an Arjay Miller scholar. Indians are now at top levels in many IT firms – the notable being Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, and Sundar Pichai, head of most major Google products. A recent entrant is Bhaskar Ghosh, management committee member and group chief executive of technology delivery at Accenture.
Roger Federer Won Brisbane Title
Roger Federer of Switzerland won his 1000th ATP career win at the Brisbane International. He defeated Canadian player Milos Raonic in the finals. It was his 1000th win and was 83rd career title. Only retired greats Jimmy Connors (1,253) and Ivan Lendl (1,071) have won more than 1,000 matches on the men’s tour.
Advanced EW Suite Tejas-PV1 Aircraft Successfully Launched by DRDO
An advanced Electronic Warfare (EW) suite developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) was successfully tested onboard the country’s Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas-PV1. EW suite consists of Radar Warner and Jammer. This suit gives pilot an additional capability of nullifying the effect of detected radar threat by appropriate mode of jamming. It will replace existing EW systems, which are fitted on various combat aircraft as they consist of basic equipment – Radar Warner Receiver. It only has capability to provide warning to the aircraft pilot in case of detection of a radar threat.
