Sanskrit scholar Prabhu Nath Dwivedi Conferred The Sahitya Akademi Award

Eminent Sanskrit scholar Prabhu Nath Dwivedi has been conferred the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for 2014 for his “Kanakalochanaha” collection of short stories. The collection comprises of 16 short-stories that touch upon various social issues eroding the system. The award will be presented to him in March 2015 during the Festival of Letters that will be organised by the Sahitya Akademi in New Delhi.


Former CBI chief Resigns As UPSC Member

Former Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director A.P. Singh on 14 January resigned as member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). He sent his resignation to the President. His resignation is yet to be accepted by the President Pranab Mukherjee. He was appointed as a UPSC Member in 2013.


Joseph Vaz Canonized As Sri Lanka’s First Saint

Pope Francis on 14 January cannonised Joseph Vaz, the first saint of Sri Lanka. Joseph Vaz was beatified by Pope John Paul in 1995. Pope Francis cannonised Saint Joseph Vaz in presence of hundreds of thousands of people packed on a Colombo oceanfront during his visit to Sri Lanka. The Pope told the hushed crowd that Vaz was an example of religious tolerance relevant to Sri Lanka.
