India Declares itself Free from Avian Influenza (H5N1)

The Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries in the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers welfare has declared India free from Avian Influenza (H5N1) from 5th September, 2016. India had notified outbreak of Avian Influenza (H5N1) on 09 May 2016 at Humnabad, Bidar district, Karnataka. There has been no further outbreak reported in the country thereafter.


Vice President Ansari to represent India at NAM Summit

Vice-President Hamid Ansari will be representing India at the upcoming 17th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to be held at Margarita Island in Venezuela from September 17-18. India is one of the founding members of the Non-Aligned Movement and India hosted the 7th NAM Summit in 1983 in New Delhi. The last NAM Summit was hosted by Iran in 2012.


Devendra Jhajharia wins gold medal in javelin throw at 2016 Rio Paralympics

India’s Devendra Jhajharia (36) has won gold medal in the men’s javelin throw, F46 event held at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. With this, he becomes only the second gold medallist at the Paralympics for the country. He won the gold medal with world-record throw of 63.97 metres. Devendra victory took India’s medal tally at this edition of the Paralympics to four medals – two golds, one silver and a bronze. He had also secured the gold medal in the javelin event at the 2004 Athens Paralympics with record throw of 62.15 metres. With this, he also became first Indian Paralympian to win two gold medals at the Paralympics.


14 September: National Hindi Divas

The National Hindi Divas, an annual literary-day is being observed on 14 September in Hindi speaking regions of India and other countries with Hindi speaking population. Observance of the day seeks to propagate Hindi language and its cultural heritage and values. It also seeks to promote the Matra Bhasha i.e. mother tongue of India and show its importance as a language in the country and the world at large. On this occasion President Pranab Mukherjee will present the Rajbhasha awards at Rashtrapati Bhawan. The Rajbhasha awards were instituted by the Department of Official Language of Union Home Ministry to recognize the excellent contribution of Ministries, Departments and Nationalized Banks in the field of Hindi.


Reliance Communications and Aircel to be merged

Anil Ambani led Reliance Communications (RCom) has signed a deal with Maxis Communications Berhad (MCB) for merger of wireless businesses of Aircel Limited with itself. The merger is considered as the largest-ever consolidation in the Indian telecom sector. The merged entity will be country’s fourth-largest phone company in terms of customers and revenue. The merged company will have second-largest spectrum holding amongst all operators in the country aggregating 448 MHz across the 850, 900, 1800 and 2100 MHz bands. It will be one of India’s largest private sector companies, with an asset base of over $9.7 billion (Rs. 65,000 crore) and net worth of $5.2 billion (Rs. 35,000 crore).


Jim Yong Kim heads for second term as World Bank president

Jim Yong Kim is heading for another five-year term as president of the World Bank. Kim, 56, has focused the World bank on programs to reduce extreme poverty. Kim’s first term ends on June 30, 2017. Jim Yong Kim MD, PhD, also known as Kim Yong is a South Korean-American physician and anthropologist who has served as the 12th President of the World Bank since July 1, 2012.
