17 October: International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed globally on 17 October for eradication of poverty throughout the world. It seeks to promote awareness among people to eradicate poverty and destitution around the world particularly in developing countries. 2016 International Day for the Eradication of Poverty Theme is “Moving from humiliation and exclusion to participation: Ending poverty in all its forms”. It highlights importance to recognize and address the humiliation and exclusion suffered by many people living in poverty.


Ashok Leyland launches first India-made electric bus

Hinduja Group flagship Ashok Leyland today launched – Circuit – the first “Made in India” electric bus. The bus with a minimum seating capacity of 35 to a maximum of 65 can run up to 120 kilometres on a single recharge under standard test conditions.


Navdeep Suri to be India’s new envoy to UAE

Senior diplomat Navdeep Singh Suri has been appointed Ambassador to United Arab Emirates. He is currently serving as Indian High Commissioner in Canberra. Suri had served in India’s diplomatic missions in Cairo, Damascus, Washington, Dar es Salaam and London and as India’s Consul General in Johannesburg.


Rwanda’s last king, Kigeli V, dies in the US at age 80

The last king of Rwanda, Kigeli V, died. He was 80. Born Jean-Baptiste Ndahindurwa in Kamembe, the monarch went into exile in 1960 after clashing with the Belgian colonial power. In 1961, the monarchy was abolished. Kigeli V lived in exile in several African countries before settling in the suburbs of Washington, DC, in 1992.


Indian wrestlers win four medals at 2016 TAFISA World Games

Four Indian wrestlers have won four medals individually including a gold medal, at the sixth edition of the TAFISA World Games held in Jakarta, Indonesia. Medal winning Wrestlers are:
Wrestler Dalmiya: He had won gold medal in 60kg category by defeating Azerbaijan’s Muhammad Sahan by 4-1 points in the final match
Luv Singh: He won the silver medal in the 80 kg category after he was defeated by Muhammad Alim of Azerbaijan by 1-5 points in the final match.
Naveen Kumar: He won the bronze medal in 90 Kg category after he defeated Lithuania’s Oleg by 5-2 points.
Josil: He won the bronze medal in the super heavyweight category by defeating Mustafa Sultani of Afghanistan by 3-1 points.
