“Dipa Karmakar Becomes First Indian Woman Gymnast To Qualify For Olympics”

Dipa Karmakar created history by becoming the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for Olympics as she booked a berth for the Rio Games after a strong performance at the final qualifying and test event.She earned a total score of 52.698 points in the Olympics qualifying event to book a berth for artistic gymnastics in Rio Games to be held in August 2016. Karmakar has been listed as the 79th gymnast among individual qualifiers in the list of women’s artistic gymnast who have qualified for the Rio Olympics.


Inzamam-ul-Haq Appointed Pakistan Chief Selector

Inzamam-ul-Haq, former Pakistan captain, has been appointed as the chief selector of Pakistan on 18 April 2016. Inzamam, a veteran of 120 tests and 398 one-day internationals, replaced Haroon Rasheed as chief selector. The PCB has not set a fixed term for Inzamam’s tenure.


Deepak Mishra Appointed as ADG of CRPF

Deepak Mishra, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1984 batch (AGMU cadre), has been appointed as Additional Director General in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).CRPF is the largest statutory Central Armed Police Forces in India. It functions and operates under the aegis of Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). It was established in 1939, under Crown Representative’s Police but after independence it was made statutory Central Reserve Police Force after the enactment of the CRPF Act, 1949. At present CRPF is the world’s largest paramilitary force with 228 battalions and over three lakh personnel.


World Heritage Day 2016 Observed Globally

International Day for Monuments and Sites traditionally called World Heritage Day was observed across the world on 18 April with theme ‘The Heritage of Sport’. The theme was decided by the International Council for Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in the backdrop of Rio Olympics 2016 that is to be hosted in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in August 2016. The first world Heritage Day was celebrated on 18 April 1982 by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in Tunisia and was approved in 1983 by UNESCO. ICOMOS was created at the Second Congress of Architects and Specialists of Historic Buildings, held in Venice in 1964, which adopted 13 resolutions, the first being the International Charter for the Conservation and Restoration of Monuments and Sites, better known as the Venice Charter, and the second, put forward by UNESCO.
