Wrestler Narsingh Yadav banned for four years by Court of Arbitration for Sport

India wrestler Narsingh Yadav has been slapped a four-year ban by CAS following an appeal by WADA as there was no evidence to accept his claim that his food was spiked by banned doping substance. With CAS ruling, Yadav’s suspension begins immediately and he will not be able to participate in the 2016 Rio Olympics. He had qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics in the 74 category of freestyle wrestling event.


IIT-Kanpur adopts five villages under Namami Gange programme

IIT-Kanpur has adopted five villages under the Namami Gange programme and will use its expertise to restrict the flow of sewage into the river. These five villages are Ramel Nagar, Khoyra Katree, Pratapur, Hari Hindpur, and Katri Ladhva Khera. Under the initiative, IIT-Kanpur will use its expertise to restrict the flow of sewage into the River Ganga. The task will be undertaken by the institute’s civil engineering department.


Airlander 10: World’s largest aircraft embarks maiden flight

The world’s “largest aircraft” has embarked on its maiden flight, four days after a previous attempt was abandoned due to technical issues. The Airlander 10 – part plane, part airship – took to the skies amid cheers and applause from crowds gathered at an airfield in Cardington, central England. It is a hybrid airship made by Hybrid Air Vehicles in United Kingdom. Its successful flight comes 85 years after another airship the ill-fated R101 took off in October 1930 from the same airfield before crashing in France. Airlander 10 is hybrid ship i.e. it is a partly plane and partly airship filled with helium gas. It is 92-metre-long and 43.5m wide. It can fly at up to 4,880 metres and reach speeds of 148 kilometres per hour. It can also carry a 10-tonne payload.


SBI board approves merger of 5 associate banks, BMB with itself

The State Bank of India’s (SBI’s) board of directors has approved merger of its five associate banks and Bharatiya Mahila Bank (BMB) with itself. These five subsidiaries are State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur, State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Mysore, State Bank of  Travancore and Bharatiya Mahila Bank. The board has finalised the share swap ratio for three of the listed subsidiaries and BMB. It also approved merger of two unlisted associate banks State Bank of Patiala and State Bank of Hyderabad with it. The merger will create a global-sized bank with assets worth over Rs 37 lakh crore. It will make SBI one of the top 50 global financial powerhouses in the world.


Kerala Govt. allots Rs 10,000 cr for govt schools

Kerala govt has earmarked Rs 10,000 crore for state-run and aided schools for the next 5 years. As part of the drive, around 60,000 new hi-tech class rooms will be set up in all govt and aided schools. About 1,000 schools will be elevated to international standards.
