Strong Earthquake Hits Indonesia

On 2 July 2013,6.1 magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia’s Aceh province.Due to this earthquake 275 people were injured and 4300 houses were collapsed.


Sujatha Singh is India’s next Foreign Secretary

Sujatha Singh , currently envoy to Germany, will be India’s next Foreign Secretary following an approval of her appointment by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 2 July 2013.Due to the retairement of Present Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai on 31 July 2013 PMO decided her name.She belongs to 1976 batch IFS officer and she will continue 2years in this post.Ms Singh, who will be the third woman to head the services after Chokila Iyer and Nirupama Rao.


Himachal Pradesh Declared First Smoke -Free State

On 2 July 2013,Himachal Pradesh was declared as being the first “smoke-free” state in the country for achieving 85.42 per cent compliance with the relevant parameters.Health minister Kaul Singh Thakur declared the state a “smoke-free” state at a function in Shimla organised jointly by Himachal Pradesh Voluntary Health Association (HPVHA), International Union for Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (New Delhi) and Department of Health and Family Welfare.


Parimarjan Negi Wins Continental Chess Open Title

On 2 July 2013,India`s young Grand Master Parimarjan Negi has won the Continental Chess Association Open title in Washington.The second and third places are won by the International Master Bindi Cheng of Canada and American Grand Master Konrad Holt from Kansas respectively.


Computer Mouse Inventor Doug Engelbart Died

The inventor of the computer mouse, Doug Engelbart has died in California on 2 July 2013 at age of 88. Doug Engelbart was born on 30 January 1925 in Portland,Oregon.He invented a mouse at Stanford Research Institute (SRI) in 1963.
