World Refugee Day Observed Across The Globe

World Refugee Day was observed across the world on 20 June 2015. This day observed to enhance awareness of the condition of refugees throughout the world. The day was first observed in 2001 after the United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 55/76 on December 4, 2000 to mark June 20 as World Refugee Day. In this resolution, it was noted that 2001 marked the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. According to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) report, the number of refugees including internally displaced and asylum-seekers across the globe has for the first time crossed 50 million in 2013 which is the highest since the World War II.


ISRO’s GAGAN To Provide Navigational Support To Railways

ISRO has announced to provide navigational support to Indian Railways through GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation (GAGAN) system. GAGAN was jointly developed by the ISRO and Airports Authority of India (AAI) with a view to assist aircraft in accurate landing. The GAGAN signal is being broadcast through two Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) satellites – GSAT8 and GSAT10. The system was launched in 2011 as a payload with GSAT-8. With this launch India had joined the club elite nations comprising of US, Europe and Japan who have the same level of space-based augmentation for navigational purpose.


Historian Ramachandra Guha Selected For Japan’s Fukuoka Prize

Historian-author Ramachandra Guha has been selected for Japan’s prestigious Fukuoka Prize 2015 in the Academic category. Apart from him Thant Myint-U (Grand Prize category) and Minh Hanh (Arts and Culture category) were also chosen for this edition of award. They have been selected for their outstanding contributions to academia, arts and culture across Asia.
