India, Bangladesh has inaugurated Petrapole checkpost

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina jointly inaugurated the Petrapole Integrated Check Post (ICP). It was inaugurated by both leaders through video-conferencing. Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee also had participated in the video-conference. Petrapole ICP is located in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. Petrapole is the Indian side of Petrapole-Benapole border checkpoint between India and Bangladesh. The multipurpose check post is aimed at further facilitating increased India-Bangladesh trade. It will provide better facilities for effective and efficient discharge of functions such as security, immigration, customs, quarantine, etc, while also providing support facilities for smooth cross-border movement of persons, goods and transport.


NDMC signs MoU with NEERI to develop sewage treatment plants

New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has signed a MoU with National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) to develop 12 sewage treatment plants (STP). NEERI will provide its expertise in this field and the treatment plants to help NDMC to irrigate its parks in a bid to develop green areas and revamp big and small parks. The 12 STP projects of NDMC will also help increase the green cover in NDMC areas and curb dust pollution. In the first phase, 12 STPs will be installed across in NDMC areas. Each plant will have a capacity of treating sewage water ranging from 50,000-1 lakh litres. All these plants will be connected to all parks of NDMC which will help the horticulture department to maintain the parks.


ECI launches National Electoral Roll Purification 2016

“The Election Commission of India (ECI) has launched National Electoral Roll Purification (NERP) 2016 across the country to correct errors in electoral rolls and enrolment of all eligible citizens, among other things. The 2016 motto of the ECI is “No voter to be left behind”.
NREP 2016 will ensure single electoral register entry for every eligible elector with unique Elector Photo Identity Card (EPIC) number, removal of all absent, shifted or dead electors’ entries and repeat entries.”


Kerala Tourism has secured two Gold Awards at PATA awards

Kerala Tourism has secured two Gold Awards at the prestigious Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) awards in recognition of its trendsetting marketing initiatives. The two gold medals for ‘Marketing Media’ are in the categories of ‘Travel Advertisement Broadcast Media’ and ‘E-Newsletter’, which were clinched by the successful ‘Visit Kerala’ television commercial campaign and the popular Kerala Tourism E-Newsletter respectively. The awards will be presented at the PATA Gold Awards Luncheon and Presentation on September 9 in Jakarta. This year’s awards attracted 212 entries from 71 organizations and individuals worldwide. Last year also, Kerala Tourism has awarded the PATA Gold in the Heritage and Culture category for the Muziris Heritage Project.


Facebook’s Internet drone Aquila passes first full-scale test

Social networking giant Facebook’s Internet drone named ‘Aquila’ has passed first full-scale test. This was the first time using the full-scale drone. The flight test was undertaken in Yuma, Arizona (US) and was only meant to last for 30 minutes. But the test went so well that the plane was kept flying for up for 96 minutes. Aquila is solar solar-powered internet drone being designed to beam the Internet service to remote areas of the world. It is developed by Facebook’s Connectivity Lab. It is made of a carbon fiber composite body and weighs less than 1,000 pounds. Its communications payload uses lasers to transfer data.
