Narendra Modi Appointed as Chancellor of Viswa Bharati University

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been appointed as the new chancellor of Viswa Bharati University for the next three years. He replaces former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who stepped down recently.  Viswa-Bharati was declared a central university and an institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament in 1951. It is the only central varsity which has the Prime Minister as its chancellor. While President of India is the Paridarsaka (visitor) of the University, the West Bengal governor is the Pradhana (rector), and the prime minister the Acharya (chancellor). The President of India appoints the Upacharya (vice-chancellor) of the University.


Union Cabinet Approved 33% Reservation For Women In Police Forces of UTs, Delhi

The Union Cabinet approved 33 per cent reservation for women in police forces of all union territories, including the Delhi Police, through direct recruitment in non-gazetted posts. The move aims at increasing representation of women in police and to make the force gender sensitive. This reservation for women will be applicable horizontally and in each category (SC/ST/OBC and others) through direct recruitment in non-gazetted posts — from constables to sub-inspectors.


Lata Mangeshkar Presented with Laadli Voice of the Century Award

Legendary Singer Lata Mangeshkar was presented with the Laadli Voice of the Century award for her outstanding contribution to Indian music over the years. The event is instituted by Population First (PF), which is an initiative for gender equality and community empowerment.


International Day of Forests

International Day of Forests was observed across the world on 21 March 2015. The theme of the Forests and Climate Change. The theme highlights forest-based solutions to address climate change mitigation and adaptation, and more broadly forests and sustainable development.The day provides a platform to raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests and of trees outside forests. The day is also used to communicate the vital role forests play in poverty eradication, environmental sustainability and food security.
