India Wins Re-election To UNHRC

India was on 21 October re-elected to the UN’s main human rights body for the period of 2015-17, receiving the highest number of votes in the Asia-Pacific group. India is currently a member of the 47-nation UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and its first term is due to end on December 31, 2014. After India’s re-election, the country’s Ambassador to the UN Asoke Mukerji emphasised that the country’s focus will be to make the UN human rights system more effective and address issues through a constructive approach. India was seeking re-election to the UN body, the elections for which were held in United Nations in the UN General Assembly.


Terry Walsh Resigned As India’s Chief Hockey Coach

The Indian men’s hockey team chief coach Terry Walsh resigned from his post on 21 October. He resigned due to a pay dispute with the Sports Authority of India (SAI).  Walsh is the former Olympian who was part of Australia’s silver winning team in 1976 Montreal Olympics. He represented Australia in three Olympics. Former Australian legend Terry Walsh took over the post as India’s chief hockey coach from Michael Nobbs.


Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day Observed Across The World

Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day was observed across the World on 21 October 2014. The day was observed to create awareness of the need to prevent iodine deficiency. One third of the world population is exposed to the risk of iodine deficiency disorders. In India, more than six core people are suffering from iodine deficiency disorders including endemic goiter and 88 lakh people from mental or motor handicaps.


 Manohar Lal Khattar Is New Haryana Chief Minister

BJP leader Manohar Lal Khattar will be the next chief minister of Haryana. Khattar was on 21 October elected as Chief Minister after a meeting of the party’s 47 MLAs who won seats in the recently-concluded state Assembly elections.
