Noted Kannada Writer UR Ananthamurthy Died

Noted Kannada writer UR Ananthamurthy died in Bangalore on 22 August. He was 82. Ananthamurthy’s main works included Samskara, Bhava, Bharathi Pura and Avasthe works were translated into several Indian and European languages and were awarded with important literary prizes. Ananthamurthy in his literary life won the Padma Bhushan in 1998. In 1994, he became a recipient of Jnanpith award, the highest literary honour conferred in India. He was the sixth person among eight recipients of the Jnanpith Award for the Kannada language. He became a recipient of Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 2004.


T M Bhasin Elected As Chairman of IBA

T M Bhasin, chairman and managing director of Indian Bank, was elected as the chairman of the umbrella banking body Indian Banks Association (IBA) for 2014-15. Bhasin will be succeeding K R Kamath, who is also the chairman and managing director of Punjab National Bank. Besides, Chanda Kochhar who is ICICI Bank’s managing director, Arun Kaul, CMD of UCO Bank and S L Bansal who is the head of Oriental Bank of Commerce have been elected as the deputy chairpersons of the association. Arundhati Bhattacharya, chairperson of State Bank of India was elected as Honorary Secretary of IBA for 2014-15.
