India makes the first contribution to UN Trust Fund

India has contributed USD 100,000 to a trust fund set up for victims of sexual exploitation and abuse by peacekeepers. The fund was established at the end of March and continues to seek funds to support services for victims and address gaps in services. This is the first contribution to the Trust Fund the Secretariat has received. India has historically been one of the largest troop-contributing countries in peacekeeping operations and is currently ranked as the second largest contributor of military and police personnel. Brazilian scientists identify another type of Zika-transmitting mosquito

Brazilian scientists have identified Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito infected by the Zika virus as another type of Zika-transmitting mosquito. It was identified by researchers from the public Brazilian laboratory Fundacion Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) in three out of 80 groups of mosquitoes analysed up until now. Up until now, transmission of the Zika virus was only known through the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the same vector that spreads Dengue and Chikungunya. The Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito is known as the domestic mosquito in Brazil. In Recife, where the majority of Zika cases of Brazil were registered, the population of this mosquito is estimated to be 20 times larger than that of the Aedes aegypti.


Maharashtra CM launches pilot project of e-complaint system

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has launched a pilot project of e-complaint system on an experimental basis in Pune. After the pilot project, the system will be launched across the state in next eight months. The project has been launched during the concluding ceremony of 14th Maharashtra Police Duty Meet at SRPF ground at Ramtekdi. The pilot e-complaint initiative by the Pune Police helps citizens to file a police complaint from and also avoid making unnecessary rounds of the police stations for registering complaints in the days to come.


Singer Bapi Lahiri honoured with Mahanayak award by West Bengal Government

Renowned Music Director and singer Bapi Lahiri was honoured with Mahanayak award by the West Bengal Government. CM Mamata Banerjee conferred the Mahanayak Samman upon Bapi Lahiri on the occasion of 36th death anniversary of Uttam Kumar. In addition, Bengali films “Bela sheshe” and “Shankhachil” were jointly awarded as the best Bengali films of the year.


Neeraj Chopra becomes 1st Indian to set world record in Jr athletics Championship

Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has created history by becoming first Indian Junior athlete to create a World Record in Jr athletics Championship. He achieved this feat, by throwing javelin at a record distance of 86.48 m in his second attempt in the IAAF Under-20 World Athletics Championship held in Bydgoszcz, Poland. He won gold medal in this event. Besides, South African Johan Grobler (80.59m) won the silver medal and Anderson Peters (79.65m) of Granada won the bronze medal. With this, Neeraj Chopra broke the previous record of 84.69 metres held by Latvian Zigismunds Sirmais by nearly two metres. Neeraj Chopra is only the third Indian athlete who has won a medal in the U-20 World Championships.
