Missionaries of Charity Head Sister Nirmala Joshi Died

Sister Nirmala Joshi, who succeeded Mother Teresa as the head of Missionaries of Charity, died on 23 June in Kolkata. She was 81. She had taken over as Superior General in March 1997 after the death of Mother Teresa. In April 2009, Sister Mary Prema was elected to succeed Sister Nirmala during a general chapter held in Calcutta. Sister Nirmala Joshi was born in 1934 in Ranchi, erstwhile Bihar and Orissa province of British Indian Empire (now the capital of Jharkhand) in Hindu family. She had joined the Missionaries of Charity in 1976 after she had dedicated herself to the service of the poor after getting inspired by the work of Mother Teresa. She was bestowed with the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian award in 2009 for her services to the nation.


Lucknow Zoo Renamed After Last Nawab Wajid Ali Shah

Uttar Pradesh government on 23 June decided to rename Lucknow Zoological Garden and Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary in Unnao after Nawab Wajid Ali Shah and freedom fighter Chandrashekhar Azad respectively. Shah was the last Nawab of Oudh under whom the province was annexed by the British under the policy of Doctrine of Lapse in 1856.


Uma Bharti Launches Mobile App To Aid Clean Ganga Mission

Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti has launched the ‘Bhuvan Ganga Mobile Application’ to enable the public to collect and report information on various pollution sources that affect the water quality of the river. The application and web portal was launched after a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the National Mission for Clean Ganga and the National Remote Sensing Centre (ISRO).


NUSI honoured with Best Welfare Organisation 2015 Award

India’s oldest and largest shipping trade union, National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) has been honoured with the ‘Best Welfare Organisation of the Year – 2015’ award. The award was presented to Abdulgani Y Serang , NUSI general secretary by Koji Sekimizu, Secretary General of International Maritime Organisation at a function held in London.
