ADB approves $500 million Loan For River Bridge In Bihar

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on 23 June approved a $500 million loan to build a bridge across Ganges River in Bihar. The loan funds will be used to build 9.8 km road bridge in Bihar on the Ganga River. On completion of the project it will be the India’s longest river bridge. It will provide vital transport links between the northern and southern parts of Bihar and with neighbouring Nepal.


Colombia , FARC Rebels Signed Historic Ceasefire Agreement

The Colombian government and the leftist FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) rebels have signed a historic ceasefire and disarmament agreement on 23 June 2016. It was signed in presence of Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, FARC leader Timoleon Jimenez and UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon at a ceremony held in Havana, Cuba.  The ceasefire and disarmament agreement is considered as one of the last steps toward ending a half-century conflict that has killed hundreds of thousands of people in Colombia. The deal puts a definitive end to fighting in Latin America’s longest civil war, which has torn Colombia apart with shootings and bombardments in its coca-rich jungles and hills. The ceasefire and disarmament agreement establishes a bilateral ceasefire and end to hostilities and the definitive laying down of arms. Under the agreement, the FARC rebels must hand over its weapons to United Nations monitors within six months. The FARC’s members (estimated to be around 7,000) will gather in “normalisation zones” for a demobilisation process.


United Kingdom In Historic Referendum Votes To Exit EU

People of United Kingdom (UK) in a historic Brexit referendum have voted in favour of leaving European Union (EU). In the Brexit referendum, the ‘Leave’ side won decisively by securing 51.9% of the total votes overturning ‘Remain’ side which secured 48.1% votes. This is the second referendum on UK’s relationship with the EU. In 1975, in a referendum on whether the UK should stay or leave the EU, the country voted for staying with 67.2% votes. After results were declared UK Prime Minister David Cameron, the architect of the referendum and a passionate supporter of UK within the EU, announced stepping down as Prime Minister in October 2016.


International Olympic Day Celebrated Across the World on 23 June 

International Olympic Day was celebrated across the world on 23 June 2016. To mark the occasion, over 160 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and sports organizations across the world organised a series of events to spread Olympic values and encourage people to get involved in sports and lead more active lives. The day is celebrated for promotion of participation of people in the sports all across the world, irrespective of athletic, gender or age ability. The 2016 Summer Olympics host-city Rio de Janeiro unveiled its athletes’ village to mark the day. The Brazilian city will host the XXXI Olympiad between 5 August and 21 August 2016.The day is celebrated for promotion of participation of people in the sports all across the world, irrespective of athletic, gender or age ability. The International Olympic Day was initiated in 1948 for commemorating the commencement of modern Olympic Games on 23 June 1894 at Sorbonne in Paris. There are three main pillars of the International Olympic Day – discover, learn and move. These three pillars of the sports event are deployed by the National Olympic Committees into sports, educational and cultural activities.
