Parliament Passed Sikh Gurdwaras (Amendment) Bill, 2016

The Lok Sabha on 25 April 2016 passed the Sikh Gurdwaras (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The bill – already passed by the Rajya Sabha on 16 March 2016 – seeks to amend the Sikh Gurdwaras Act, 1925 with effect from 8 October 2003. It proposes removal of an exception made for Sahajdharis in 1944 that allowed them to vote in elections for the Board and committees instituted under the Act.


Lok Sabha Passes Regional Centre for Biotechnology Bill, 2016

The Lok Sabha on 25 April passed the Regional Centre for Biotechnology Bill, 2016 to provide statutory status to the existing Regional Centre for Biotechnology in Faridabad, Haryana. The Bill seeks to provide legislative backing to the Regional Centre and also confers upon it the status of an institution of national importance.


Indian Rower Dattu Bhokanal Qualifies For Rio Olympics

Indian rower Dattu Baban Bhokanal qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics scheduled to be held in August 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He qualified Rio Olympics after winning a silver medal in the men’s single sculls event at the FISA Asian and Oceania Olympic Qualification Regatta held on 25 April at Chung-ju in South Korea. He will be the lone Indian rower taking part in Rio Games. Bhokanal is from Maharashtra’s Nashik district. He took up rowing after he joined the army. He won a silver medal in the single sculls category at the Asian Rowing Championship in Beijing in 2015.


World Malaria Day 2016 

World Malaria Day (WMD) 2016 was observed globally on 25 April 2016. The theme for 2016 is End Malaria For Good.This year’s theme reflects the vision of a malaria-free world set out in the Global technical strategy for malaria 2016-2030. Adopted in May 2015 by the World Health Assembly, the strategy aims to dramatically lower the global malaria burden over the next 15 years. The World Malaria Day was established by the 60th session of the World Health Assembly, a decision-making body of World Health Organization (WHO) in May 2007. It was established to provide understanding and education of malaria and also spread information on year-long intensified implementation of national malaria-control strategies. It is one of eight official global public health campaigns currently marked by the WHO.
