Eminent Cartoonist R K Laxman Died

Eminent cartoonist Rasipuram Laxman (famously known as RK Laxman) was died on 26 January in Pune. He was 93. One of the post-Independence India’s greatest caricaturists was the creator of The Common Man which was published in Times of India newspaper. He also was an illustrator, humorist and novelist. His Common Man, created in 1957, was the symbol of trials and tribulations of India’s ordinary people. His cartoons also reflected little joys and sorrows of the Common Man and the mess they found themselves in thanks to the political class and bureaucracy. He was born in the then Mysore State on 24 October 1921. He joined Times Group in 1947 and with the Group till the end of his life. He created the popular mascot for the Asian Paints group called Gattu in 1954. He is recipient of Padma Vibhushan (2005) and Ramon Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts (1984).


Miss Colombia Paulina Vega Crowned Miss Universe 2015

Miss Colombia Paulina Vega was crowned as Miss Universe 2015 at the final of the beauty pageant held in Miami. Vega, a 22-year-old student of business administration from Barranquilla, Colombia was crowned by the 2014 pageant winner Venezuelan Gabriela Isler.


Major Mukund Varadarajan and Naik Neeraj Singh Posthumously Awarded Ashok Chakra

Major Mukund Varadarajan and Naik Neeraj Kumar Singh, the two Army personnel who laid down their lives combating terrorists in Kashmir Valley, were on 26 January awarded posthumously the highest peacetime military honour, the Ashok Chakra, by President Pranab Mukherjee.The families of Major Varadarajan and Naik Singh, who showed exemplary courage in tackling terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir, were honoured by the President at the Republic Day parade.The awards were received by their wives at the 66th Republic Day celebrations, which was graced by US President Barack Obama.
