International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking Observed On 26 June

International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed on 26 June 2015. The theme of the 2015 is Let’s Develop our Lives, our Communities, our identities without Drugs. This day serves as a reminder of the goals agreed to by Member States of creating an international society free of drug abuse. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on this day launched campaigns to raise awareness about the global drug problem. United Nations on 7 December 1987, by resolution 42/112 of the General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. This resolution recommended further action with regard to the report and conclusions of the 1987 International Conference on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.


Sri Lankan President Dissolves Parliament

The Sri Lankan President, Maithripala Sirisena, has dissolved his country’s Parliament, 160 days after assuming office in January 2015. It was also announced on 26 June that the Parliamentary elections will be held on August 17, while the new Parliament is scheduled to meet on 1 September 2015.


Gay Marriage Legalised By US Supreme Court

The U.S. Supreme Court declared on 26 June that same sex couples have a right to marry anywhere in the United States. Gay and lesbian couples already can marry in 36 States and the District of Columbia. The court’s 5-4 ruling means the remaining 14 States, in the South and Midwest, will have to stop enforcing their bans on same sex marriage.


Sachin Tendulkar Voted ‘Test player of 21st century

Sachin Tendulkar, who retired from international cricket in 2013 after playing his 200th Test, has been voted the ‘Best Test player’ of the 21st century in an online poll. The online poll was conducted by Cricket Australia’s website for the list of the 100 best Test players since 2000. In this poll, Sachin got the highest number of votes to emerge top on the list. Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara received the second highest votes. In this list Sachin is lone Indian cricketer to be figured in the top-10 list, while there are four Australian, three South African and two Sri Lankan cricketers.
