Anju Bobby George & Pullela Gopichand Become Members of Khelo India

India’s lone athletics World Championship medal winner Anju Bobby George and chief national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand have been drafted as members of Khelo India, a national programme for the development of sports in the country, an initiative by the Government. Khelo India is a seven-member committee, in which Anju and Gopichand are the two sportspersons. The committee will be headed by Sports Secretary Rajiv Yadav. Known for her feats as a long jumper, Anju has recently quit as the president of the Kerala Sports Council along with 13 other members in protest against the “insulting behaviour” of Kerala Sports Minister E P Jayarajan.


Nokia Appoints Sanjay Malik as India Head

“Nokia has appointed Sanjay Malik as the new head of the India market. He will be taking over from the current India head Sandeep Girotra who has been recently promoted as the head of the Asia-Pacific and Japan market for Nokia. Malik will be based in Gurgaon and will lead the customer operations, drive the business growth strategy and  customer engagement services, effective from August 1, 2016. He is currently the vice president and head of global network implementation services, which is a part of the company’s Global Services business”


“International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking Observed Globally”

“International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed on 26 June 2016. The day was observed with theme Listen First. The theme is an initiative to increase support for prevention of drug use that is based on science. It highlights the importance of effective investment in the well-being of children and youth, their families and their communities to fight problem of illicit drugs. The day is also observed as an expression of United Nations’ (UN) determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.The day was officially instituted by UN after the United Nations general Assembly (UNGA) had passed resolution 42/112 in December 1987. The date, 26 June was chosen to commemorate Lin Zexu’s (Chinese scholar and official of the Qing dynasty) efforts of dismantling of the opium trade in Guangdong, China just before the First Opium War in China (1839–42).”


Chile Won 2016 Copa America Football Tournament

Chile on 26 June won the 2016 Copa America Football tournament by defeating Argentina in a penalty shootout. In the final match played at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey (US) Chile defeated Argentina by 4-2 goals in the penalty shootout as in the regulation period both teams failed to score goal. This was second Copa America title won by Chile after winning it for the first title in 2015 after defeating Argentina. With this, Chile also became the first team to win the title back to back since 1947.
