India, South Korea sign revised Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement

The Union Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation, D.V. Sadananda Gowda has launched the International Household Survey Network (IHSN) Toolkit. He also had launched new Website of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation in New Delhi. The IHSN is a standard bench mark which can be used as an active management tool for better integration of administrative structures and statistical access for policy making.


Union Govt launches Biotech-KISAN and Cattle Genomics to empower farmers

The Union Ministry of Science and Technology has launched two new schemes Biotech-KISAN and Cattle Genomics in order to apply science to boost rural economy. The intent of these programmes is to form a network to farmers directly with the scientists and experts. Thus they seek to empower farmers, especially women farmers. Biotech-KISAN (Krishi Innovation Science Application Network) Scheme Its purpose is to connect farmers, scientist and science institution across country. Under it, fellowship will be given to women farmers for training and education in farm practice. Under it scientists will spend time on farms and link communication tools to soil, water seed and market. The main aim of the scheme is to understand individual problems of the small holding farmers and provide ready solutions. It will be implemented in 15 agro-climatic zones of India in phased manner with objective of linking new technology to farm by understanding problem of local farmer.


Life expectancy highest in Jammu and Kashmir: RGI Data

According to the data given by the Registrar General of India (RGI), Jammu and Kashmir has the highest life expectancy (i.e. post-60 life expectancy), except life expectancy at birth. With this, Jammu and Kashmir has surpassed Kerala which used to be the leader in life expectancy in almost all categories of age till 2010. RGI’s Sample Registration System (SRS) had published state level life expectancy data prepared following surveys done between 2010 and 2014. The data was released for different ages: 0 (at birth), 1, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70. It had defined life expectancy as estimate of average number of additional years that a person of a given age can expect to live. However this statistical system was confined only to 21 bigger states and UTs and it did not produce life expectancy numbers on 15 small states and UTs such as Arunachal Pradesh, Lakshadweep.


Sunil Mittal elected chairman of GSMA

Telecom tycoon Sunil Bharti Mittal has been elected as chairman of GSM Association, or GSMA, that represents interests of mobile operators worldwide. GSMA named a 26-member board to serve for two years beginning January 2017 and elected Mittal, founder and chairman, Bharti Enterprises, as chairman and re-elected Mari-Noelle Jego-Laveissiere, executive vice president, Innovation, Orange Group as deputy chairperson. As GSMA chairman, Mittal will oversee the strategic direction of the organisation, which represents nearly 800 of the world’s mobile operators as well as more than 300 companies in the broader mobile ecosystem.


Legendary Kashmiri singer Raj Begum dies

Celebrated Kashmiri singer Raj Begum passed away on 26 October 2016 in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir. Begum was one of the most recognized female singers in the Kashmir Valley. She was 89. She was awarded Padma Shri in 2002.


One-man judicial Committee on OROP submits report to Defence Minister

The one-man judicial committee on One Rank One Pension (OROP) set up by the Union Government, has submitted its report to Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar. The Union had appointed the committee under the Chairmanship of retired Chief Justice of Patna High Court L Narasimha Reddy in December 2015. It was tasked to look into the anomalies arising out of implementation of OROP. The committee had held hearings at around 20 cities and towns across the country and interacted with cross sections of ex-servicemen as well as their associations. It also had received 704 representations from individuals and various ex-servicemen associations and had held extensive interactions with all stakeholders.


Union Govt constitutes Munialappa Committee to monitor bird flu situation

The Union Agricultural Ministry has constituted a High-Level Committee to monitor the bird flu situation and help state governments take steps to contain the disease. The High-Level Committee will be headed by Joint Commissioner in the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairy and Fisheries (DADF) Munialappa. The committee will have representatives from the Union Ministry of Health, Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Department of Agriculture Research and Extension (DARE) and the Delhi Government. Besides monitoring the situation, the committee will assist the state governments in taking steps to contain the spread of avian influenza. The state government will be assisted by the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Indian Veterinary Research Institute and four regional laboratories. In case of an emergency response, they will get samples tested.
