Abdul Kalam’s statue unveiled in Rameswaram

A life-size statue of former president Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was unveiled at Peikarumbu in Rameswaram on the occasion of his first death anniversary. Inaugurating the bronze statue, Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said, “Dr. Kalam will live forever in our minds and hearts. His thoughts continue to be with us all the time. It is difficult still to believe that Dr. Kalam passed away and that this great man left all of us for his heavenly abode,”. Naidu and Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar also laid the foundation stone for a national memorial for the ‘Missile man’ of India in Rameswaram. Kalam passed away on July 27 last year after he suffered a massive cardiac arrest while delivering a lecture at IIM- Shillong in Meghalaya. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen “A. P. J.” Abdul Kalam was the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007.


LeEco buys US-based VIZIO for $2 bn

Chinese handset maker LeEco said it has acquired US-based consumer electronics firm VIZIO for $2 billion. As part of the definitive agreement, LeEco will acquire all of the VIZIO hardware and software operations, technology and intellectual property and the transaction is expected to close during the fourth quarter of 2016. The VIZIO hardware and software businesses will be owned and operated as a wholly-owned subsidiary of LeEco, while VIZIO’s data business – Inscape – will spin out and operate as a separate, privately owned company. The acquisition will offer LeEco a steady install base of users and a brand that is both popular and successfully distributed throughout major North American retail channels.


Union Cabinet approves setting up of new AIIMS in Bhatinda

The Union Cabinet has approved the establishment of a new AIIMS at Bhatind, Punjab under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). The medical institution will have a hospital with capacity of 750 beds which will include Emergency Beds, Private Beds, ICU Speciality & Super Speciality beds and AYUSH beds. The new AIIMS at Bhatinda will provide super specialty health care to the population while creating a large pool of doctors and other health workers in this region.


Manipur becomes fourteenth State to join ‘UDAY’

Manipur has joined the Ujwal DISCOM (distribution company) Assurance Yojana (UDAY) scheme meant for revival of debt-stressed power distribution utilities and will get benefits of around Rs 263 crore. Manipur is the 14th state to join the UDAY. It is also the first North Eastern state to opt for the UDAY for improving the efficiency of the DISCOM. Manipur has taken a positive step towards supporting its DISCOM by signing the MOU under UDAY for improving its operational efficiency.
