Soumya Swaminathan to take charge as Dy Director-General of WHO

Soumya Swaminathan, Cheif of indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), will take charge as the Deputy Director-General for Programmes (DDP) of World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva in December 2017. Her appointment as the Deputy Director-General of WHO elevates India’s stature globally as it is the second-highest position in the WHO. Swaminathan, a pediatrician by training, is daughter of agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan, who is hailed as the father of the Green Revolution”.


Punjab Govt notifies Ban on Truckers’ Cartelisation

Punjab State Government notified the ‘Punjab Goods Carriages (Regulation and Prevention of Cartelization Rules), 2017’, banning goods carriage operators from forming cartels in the state. This notification is aimed at creating a favorable environment for industries and business houses in the state which will encourage industrial and infrastructural investment.


WHO for first time releases guidelines on child sex abuse

The World Health Organisation (WHO) for first time has formulated clinical guidelines on responding to children and adolescents who have been sexually abused. The guidelines are grounded in human rights standards and ethical principles. They will assist frontline health care providers – general practitioners, gynaecologists, nurses and others – who may directly receive victim of sexual abuse or may identify sexual abuse during course of diagnosis and treatment.


Indonesia raises Bali volcano alert to highest level

Indonesia raised its warning for Bali’s Mount Agung volcano to the top level four alert closed the holiday island’s airport and told residents near the summit to immediately evacuate, warning of the “imminent” risk of a larger eruption. Bali’s airport was closed for 24 hours, disrupting 445 flights and some 59,000 passengers, due to the eruption warning and the presence of volcanic ash from Agung.


Global University Employability Ranking 2017 – IISc Ranks 29th in the World

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has ranked 29th among the top 150 universities on Global University Employability Ranking 2017 published by Times Higher Education. Other than IISc, only two institutes from India featured among the top 150. Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) ranked 145th and Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) ranked 148th.


SAM: World’s first AI politician developed

Scientists from New Zealand have developed world’s first artificial intelligence politician named SAM. It was created by Nick Gerritsen, entrepreneur in New Zealand. The virtual politician SAM can answer person’s queries regarding local issues such as policies around housing, education and immigration. It constantly learns to respond to people through Facebook Messenger as well as a survey on its homepage. It may help to bridge the growing political and cultural divide in many countries.


Ruskin Bond conferred with Lifetime Achievement Award

Renowned Author and Padma Bhushan Awardee Ruskin Bond was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Chandigarh Literary Society during the 5th edition of Chandigarh Literature Festival. He was conferred with the award comprising a citation and Rs 2 lakh for his outstanding contribution in the field of literature.


IMMSAREX-2017 begins in Bangladesh

The International Multilateral Maritime Search and Rescue Exercise 2017 (IMMSAREX 2017) began on 27 November 2017 in Cox Bazar, Bangladesh. Admiral Sunil Lanba, Chief of the Naval Staff of Indian Navy, is attending the exercise, on an invitation from Bangladesh. The exercise will be held till 28 November 2017 under the aegis of Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS). Indian Naval ships (INS) Ranvir, Sahyadri, Gharial and Sukanya along with one Maritime Patrol Aircraft P-81 will be participating in the exercise.


India clinched 5 gold medals at World youth women boxing championship

India showing up a dominating performance at the World youth women boxing championship which is being held in N.C. Bordoloi Indoor Stadium and clinched five gold medals in their respected final matches. Haryana quartet of Nitu in the 48kg category, Jyoti Gulia in the 51kg category, Sakshi Chaudhary in the 54kg category and Shashi Chopra in the 57kg category and Assam girl Ankushita Boro in 64kg category won their respected final matches and clinched gold medals. Before India bagged two gold medals through Sarjubala Devi in the 48kg category and Minu Basumatary in the 64kg category at the inaugural edition in Antalya, Turkey, in 2011.


South Africa Contestant wins Miss Universe crown
Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, who recently earned a business management degree crowned during the event at The AXIS theatre at Planet Hollywood casino-resort on the Las Vegas Strip. The runner-up was Miss Colombia Laura Gonzalez, while the second runner-up was Miss Jamaica, Davina Bennett. Ninety-two women from around the world participated in the decades-old competition. This year’s edition had the most contestants ever, including the first-ever representatives of Cambodia, Laos and Nepal.


Gopi Wins Asian Marathon Championship Gold

Gopi Thonakal created history by becoming first Indian man to win Asian Marathon Championship. He achieved the feat in the 16th edition of the prestigious event held at Dongguan in China. He clocked 2 hours 15 minutes and 48 seconds to win gold medal. Uzbekistan’s Andrey Petrov and Byambalev Tseveenravdan of Mongolia won silver and bronze medal respectively.


PV Sindhu wins Silver at Hong Kong Badminton Open

She suffered a second successive loss to world no.1 Tai Tizu Ying of Chinese Taipei. The 400000 Hong Kong Super Series was held at Kowloon. Sindhu had won two titles at India and Korea in 2017. This is Sindhu’s second loss in the four finals that she reached this season.


Health Ministry Wins Bronze Medal at the India International Trade Fair 2017

Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has been awarded the Bronze Medal for its creative and informative display at the 37th India International Trade Fair 2017 being held at Pragati Maidan. The award was presented by Shri C R Chaudhary, Minister of State (Commerce and Industry) at a function organized to award the winners.


12th meeting of Standing Committee of Inter-State Council held

The Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh chaired the 12th meeting of the Standing Committee of Inter-State Council (ISC) held in New Delhi. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the recommendations of the Punchhi Commission on Centre-state relations.
