AITUC re-elects Ramendra Kumar & Gurudas Dasgupta

Ramendra Kumar and Gurudas Dasgupta were re-elected as President and General Secretary respectively of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC). They were re-elected at the end of the four-day 41st national conference in Coimbatore that concluded 28 February 2016.


Vinod Rai appointed as Chairman of Banks Board Bureau

Former Comptroller Auditor General of India (CAG), Vinod Rai has been selected as Chairman of the recently formed Banks Board Bureau(BBB). His appointment was done after Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the proposal of the department of financial services for the constitution of the Banks Board Bureau. Vinod Rai, a 1972-batch IAS officer from Kerala cadre was honoured with Padma Bhushan last year. He is famously known for exposing financial irregularities relating to the 2G spectrum allocation and coal mines allotment in 2009. Rai a senior Indian Administrative Service officer has served as CAG between January 2008 and May 2013. In 2014 Rai was noted as the most powerful IAS officer in the country and the most influential man among the bureaucrats.


National Science Day observed

In India February 28 is celebrated as the National Science Day i.e. Rashtriya Vigyan Diwas every year. The aim of Science day is to impart scientific temper in the minds of people of all age groups. The theme for year 2016 is “Scientific Issues for Development of the Nation” that aims at raising public appreciation. This day is celebrated as science festival in the entire nation by organising science exhibitions, seminars, workshops, symposiums and many other activities. The National Science Day is celebrated to mark the epoch-making discovery of Raman Effect by Indian physicist Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (CV Raman) on 28 February 1928. This discovery was awarded with the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. In 2013, the American Chemical Society designated the ‘Raman Effect’ as an International Historic Chemical Landmark.


2016 Dubai ATP tennis titles

“Stan Wawrinka from Switzerland has won the 2016 Dubai ATP Tennis title in the men’s singles category. In the final match played in the United Arab Emirates, he defeated Marcos Baghdatis (Cyprus) by 6-4, 7-6 (15/13) score. It was his ninth straight final and overall 13th title of his career and second of the 2016 season after winning Chennai Open.

Women’s Singles Sara Errani (Italy) won the 2016 Dubai ATP Tennis title in the women’s singles category. In the final she defeated Barbora Strýcová of Czech Republic Barbora Strýcová by 6–0, 6–2 score.

Men’s Doubles Italian pair of Simone Bolelli and Andreas Seppi has won the 2016 Dubai ATP Tennis title in the men’s doubles category. They defeated Feliciano López and Marc López pair from Spain by 6–2, 3–6, [14–12] score.

Women’s Doubles Chuang Chia-jung (Chinese Taipei) and Darija Jurak (Croatia) won the 2016 Dubai ATP Tennis title in the women’s doubles category. They defeated French pair of Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic by 6–4, 6–4 score.”
