India Won Men’s Hockey Gold Medal At 17th Asian Games

India beat Pakistan 4-2 in the penalty shoot-out to clinch the men’s hockey gold at the Asian Games, in Incheon. The gold medal is India’s third only in the history of  the Asian Games. Prior to this India won only 2 gold medals in men’s hockey event at Asian Games – 3rd Asian Games 1966 (Bangkok) and 11th Asian Games 1998 (Bangkok).


Pune-educated Stanford Professor Won US National Medal of Science

Thomas Kailath, a Pune educated Indian-American engineering professor at Stanford University, is one of the recipients of the US National Medal of Science announced by President Barack Obama. Kailath is also a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s high civilian awards and is a member of major science and engineering academies in India.  Kailath received his BE (telecom) degree from the College of Engineering, Pune before getting his SM and ScD degrees in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He then worked at the Jet Propulsion Labs in Pasadena, California, before joining Stanford University as associate professor of Electrical Engineering in 1963.


 Pakistan Recorded Highest Number Of  Polio Cases In 14 Years

Pakistan recorded the highest number of polio cases in 14 years. This was revealed by the data of polio cases released by the National Institute of Health of Pakistan on 3 October. The data revealed that polio cases in 2014 reached 202 which was the highest in 14 years. The previous highest was recorded in 2000 when it reached 199 polio cases.One of the prime reasons for the increase in the polio cases in 2014 was cited as the rise on attacks on immunisation teams.


PM Narendra Modi Addressed Nation Via All India Radio

Prime Minister Narendra Modi connected with the people through national broadcaster All India Radio. The speech, titled ‘Man ki Baat’, is exclusive to AIR and will also be telecast on all news channels of Doordarshan. The radio programme is one of the efforts being made by Modi to connect with the people. According to AIR old-timers, former prime minister Indira Gandhi was the last leader to have regularly used the radio medium to address the nation.


China Test Fired 10,000-km Range Nuclear Missile

China has test-fired an upgraded version of its 10,000-km range intercontinental ballistic missile which can reach most of the US and European cities. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) launched a Dongfeng-31B from the Wuzhai Missile and Space Test Centre also known as the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre in Shanxi province.
