Serena Williams Won 2015 Australian Open Women’s Singes Title

Serena Williams of US on 31 January won the Women’s Singles title of the Australian Open Tennis tournament at Melbourne.She defeated Maria Sharapova of Russia in the final. She now has 19 Grand Slam singles titles to her name.


India Successfully Test-Fired Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile Agni-V

India on 31 January successfully test-fired its indigenously developed, intercontinental surface-to-surface nuclear capable ballistic missile ( ICBM) ‘Agni-5’, which has a strike range of over 5000 kms and can carry a nuclear warhead of over one tonne, from Wheeler’s Island off Odisha coast. This was the third successful flight test of the Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) and the first canister trial. Indigenously built  Agni-V is 17.5m tall, solid-fuelled, surface to surface, three-stage missile with a launch weight of 50 tons, which includes a 1.5 tonne warhead.India has at present in its armoury of Agni series, Agni-1 with 700 km range, Agni-2 with 2000 km range, Agni-3 and Agni-4 with 2500 km to more than 3500 range. After a few more trials, Agni-5 will be inducted into the services.


Paul van Ass Named Indian Men’s Hockey Coach

Former Dutch National Hockey team coach Paul van Ass was appointed as the head Coach of Indian men’s hockey team. He succeeded Terry Walsh of Australia. New Zealand’s Anthony Thornton was appointed as the coach of National women’s hockey team. She replaced Neil Hawgood of Australia.Both Van Ass and Thornton were awarded a three-year contract till 2018.


Zimbabwe’s Mugabe Becomes African Union Chairman

Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe has been appointed as Chairman of African Union (AU). He succeed Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz for a one-year term. The position of chairman of the AU is a rotating one on yearly basis and largely ceremonial.
