October 31: Rashtriya Ekta Diwas
Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) is observed across India on 31 October to commemorate birth anniversary of Independent India’s first Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhai Patel. Observance of the day provides an opportunity to re-affirm inherent strength and resilience of our nation to withstand actual and potential threats to unity, integrity and security of our country. National Unity Day 2016 Theme is: “Integration of India”. To mark this occasion various activities and events are being organised across ministries and departments all over the country. Besides, Run for Unity was organised in New Delhi. The idea of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas was mooted by PM Narendra Modi in October 2014 to mark the birth anniversary of country’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
October 31: World Cities Day
The World is observing Cities Day globally on 31st October to work together for a planned and sustainable urban life in the wake of rapid growth of population and problems. The day aims to promote international community’s interest in global urbanization, push forward cooperation among countries in meeting opportunities and addressing challenges of urbanization, and contributing to sustainable urban development around the world. 2016 Theme is “Inclusive Cities, Shared Development“. It highlights the role of urbanization as a source of global development and social inclusion.
November 1 to be observed as No Tobacco Day in Punjab
Punjab government will observe November 1 as ‘No Tobacco Day’ in an effort to discourage tobacco use in the state. Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal has issued directions to all the deputy commissioners in this regard. The aim of this campaign is to reduce prevalence of tobacco or nicotine use in Punjab in order to reduce prevalence of non-communicable diseases. Sale of loose cigarettes, tobacco and e-cigarettes are banned in Punjab.
Ease of Doing Business: A.P., Telangana top in 2016 all-India ranking
Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has released the report on State-wise Ease of Doing Business rankings on 31st October 2016. The rankings are on the basis of 340-point business reform action plan and their implementation by the States. This covers the period from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016. Andhra Pradesh and Telengana topped the all-India ranking with 98.78 per cent each, followed by Gujarat with 98.21 per cent; Chhattisgarh with 97.32 per cent and Madhya Pradesh with 97.01 per cent. Haryana ranked sixth with 96.95 per cent followed by Jharkhand with 96.57 per cent; Rajasthan with 96.43 per cent; Uttarakhand with 96.13 per cent and Maharashtra completed the top 10 with 92.86 per cent.
47th international film festival of India to be held in Goa in November
SEVEN MARATHI films – including four feature and three non-feature films – have made the cut to be screened at the Indian Panorama of the 47th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa from November 20 to 29. The blockbusters like Sultan, National-award winning Baahubali and Airlift will be screened at the upcoming 47th International Film Festival of India. The selection has been made from a submission of 38 feature and 22 non-feature Marathi films.
