Prime Minister Narendra Modi Named The Straits Times ‘Asian of the Year 2014’

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been named The Straits Times “Asian of the Year 2014” for being a “development-focused” leader who also fashioned an impressive victory for his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the year’s national elections. Every December, editors of the Singapore daily pick an Asian whose actions have significantly impacted his own society or the wider Asian continent in the 12 months past. Last year, the award was shared by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The inaugural award, in 2012, went to President Thein Sein of Myanmar.


World’s Fastest 2D Camera Developed By Researchers

Biomedical researchers at the University of Washington have developed world’s fastest receive-only 2D camera, which can capture an impressive 100 billion frames per second.The camera is significantly faster than any existing receive-only devices, which are limited to on-chip storage and electronic readout speeds of 10 million frames per second.


Sardar Mohammad Raza Khan Appointed As Pakistan’s new CEC

Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan has been appointed as new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of Pakistan. The office of CEC was lying vacant since 2013 after the retirement of Fakhruddin G. Ibrahim. The announcement was made by Senator Rafiq Rajwana, Chief of the Parliamentary Committee that appointed Justice Khan. Presently, Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan is the Chief Justice of the Federal Shariat Court of Pakistan.


International Volunteer Day was Observed On 5 December

The International Volunteer Day (IVD) for Economic and Social Development was observed across the world on 5 December 2014. Theme for the year 2014 is – “People’s participation. Make change happen, volunteer!”. International Volunteer Day (IVD) is celebrated each year on 5 December and was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985.  IVD provides volunteer organisations and individual volunteers with the opportunity to raise the public awareness of their contributions to economic and social development at local, national and international levels. IVD is celebrated worldwide with thousands of volunteers involved in a range of events as diverse as the volunteers themselves.  Events include clean-up campaigns, conferences, exhibitions, morning teas and many other activities all aimed at highlighting the role of volunteers in their communities.
