World Environment Day Observed Across The World

World Environment Day (WED) was observed across the world on 5 June 2015. The day is observed every year to raise the awareness around the globe for taking positive action to protect nature and planet earth. Theme for 2015 is — ” Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care”. The host country for the WED 2015 is Italy and the celebrations will be organized by Expo Milano 2015 that will run from 1 May to 31 October 2015 and will see the participation of 140 plus countries.United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) established in 1972 is the voice of United Nations for the environment. UNEP is a body that acts as a catalyst, advocate, educator and facilitator to promote the wise use and sustainable development of the global environment.


Petteri Taalas Appointed Secretary-General of WMO

Petteri Taalas, Director-General of the Finnish Meteorological Institute, has been appointed as the next Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for a four-year mandate starting 1 January 2016. He succeeds Michel Jarraud (France). Taalas has been the Director-General of the Finnish Meteorological institute since 2002, excluding 2005 – 2007 when he worked as a Director of Development and Regional Activities department of WMO.


CIMAP Researchers Successfully Complete Whole Genome Sequencing of Tulsi

Scientists at Central Institute of Medicinal & Aromatic Plants (CIMAP), Lucknow succeeded in whole genome sequencing of Holy basil or Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum). CIMAP is a frontier plant research laboratory of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). This is the first report of complete genome sequence of Tulsi, which is both used as an essential medicinal plant and revered as Vishnupriya and worshipped for over 3000 years in India.


Taj Mahal Ranked Third Among World’s Top Landmarks

Travellers from across the globe have ranked Taj Mahal among the top three landmarks in the world. According to TripAdvisor’s 2015 Travellers Choice Attractions Awards, Taj Mahal was ranked third in the list of top landmarks.The top two places were taken by Machu Picchu in Peru and Angkor Wat in Cambodia respectively.The Tower of London was named as the best rated landmark in the UK with Edinburgh Castle in Scotland in second place.
