President Signed Ordinance To Amend The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988

President Pranab Mukherjee on 7 January signed an ordinance to amend the motor vehicles Act, 1988. The ordinance paves the way for plying of e-rickshaws on roads of the national capital Region (NCT).Earlier, the Union Cabinet, on 24 December 2014 approved promulgation of the ordinance as a bill in this regard was not passed in the Parliament during the winter session of Parliament in December 2014. The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on 18 December 2014 but got stuck in the Rajya Sabha.


ICICI Bank Launched Contactless Debit and Credit Cards

ICICI Bank on 7 January launched the country’s first contactless debit and credit cards that use the near-field communication technology, enabling one to make payments by just waving the card near merchant terminals instead of swiping the same. The near field communication (NFC) technology provides customers improved convenience of speed and security over traditional cards as these cards can complete a transaction faster and be more secured as they remain with customer.The bank has introduced these two cards in Mumbai, Hyderabad and Gurgaon to begin with and it has installed over 1,200 PoS machines capable of accepting contactless payments in these cities.


Atul Khare is new U.N. Under-Secretary-General

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed a veteran Indian diplomat and UN official, Atul Khare, as the Under-Secretary-General for Field Support, making him one of the two highest-ranking Indians at the UN.  Khare will join Vijay Nambiar, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Myanmar, on the world body’s Senior Management Group. He succeeds Ameerah Haq of Bangladesh as head of the UN Department of Field Support, which backs up the extensive network of peacekeeping and political field missions.
