New governors for five states
Former CBI Director Ashwani Kumar and Congress veteran SC Jamir were on 09 March 2013 appointed as Governors of Nagaland and Odhisa respectively. President Pranab Mukherjee also transferred Governor of Tripura DY Patil to Bihar and shifted Bihar Governor Devanand Konwar to Tripura . Former Delhi Police Commissioner Nikhil Kumar, who was serving as Governor of Nagaland, has been transferred and appointed as Governor of Kerala for the remainder of his tenure.
Maduro sworn in as Venezuelan president
Venezuela Nicolas Maduro was sworn on 09 March 2013 as Venezuela’s acting president, against the objections of the political opposition who said the move violated the country’s constitution.Late President Hugo Chavez designated Maduro as his successor before he died on 05 March 2013 of cancer. Maduro had been Chavez’s vice president.The country’s 1999 constitution says the National Assembly speaker becomes interim president in the event of a president-elect’s death or inability to be sworn in. The constitution also says a presidential election should be called within 30 days.
Former West Bengal Governor Viren J Shah passed away in Jordan
On March 9th,the former West Bengal Governor and industrialist Viren J Shah died in Jordan after a heart attack. Viren Shah went on for holiday to Jordan with his wife.Viren Shah was elected to Parliament from Junagadh in Gujarat in 1967.He was also member of the Rajya Sabha twice from 1975 to 1981 and from 1990 to 1996. He was the Governor of West Bengal from 1999 to 2004.
Kenyatta declared Kenya’s new president
On May 9th ,Uhuru Kenyatta, the Deputy Prime Minister who faces trial for alleged crimes against humanity, clinched victory in a tightly fought race for Kenya’s presidency.Uhuru Kenyatta needed over 50% of the national vote to avoid a run-off. He received 50.07% to win the elections but the victory is being disputed by his main rival, Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who has now unsuccessfully sought the presidency three times.Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta is a controversial figure as he is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on charges of crimes against humanity from his alleged role in the country’s 2007-2008 election.Kenyatta is the son of Jomo Kenyatta the first prime minister (1963-1964) and president (1964-1978), who is considered the founding father of the Kenyan nation.
