World Red Cross Day May 8, 2017

The World Red Cross Day is celebrated every year on 8th May. This date is anniversary of the birth of Henry Dunant born on 8 May 1828, the founder of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize. The Committee exists to provide compassionate care to those in any kind of need. The theme of this year 2017 is “Less Known ed Cross Stories”.


 Gadkari inaugurated country’s first bio refinery Plant

Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways inaugurated India’s first biorefinery plant that produces ethanol from a variety of biomass in pune on 7 May 2017. Gadkari stated that such projects with help stage a great revolution in India’s agriculture sector. The project is located at Rahu, a village in Daund Taluka in Pune District of Maharashtra. The newly set up plant is capable of producing one million litres of ethanol per annum by processing a variety of agricultural residue including rice and wheat straw, cotton stalk, cane trash, corn cobs with superior product yields.


 Emmanuel Macron elected as President of France

Emmanuel Macron was elected French president on 7th May, 2017. He was defeating Marine Le Pen, a far right nationalist who threatened to take France out of the European Union. Mr Macron will also become the first president from outside the two traditional main parties since the modern republics foundation in 1958. Mr Marcon had about 19.3 million votes, while Marine Le Pen scored about 10.4 million was the close rival in elections.


 3 Indian Origin scientists elected fellows of UK Royal Society

Three Indian Origin scientists have been elected fellows of the Royal Society, Britain’s independent fellowship of many of the World’s most eminent scientists, for their outstanding contributions to science. Krishna Chatterjee from Cambridge University, Subhash Khot from New York University, and Yadvinder Malhi from Oxford University are among 50 distinguished people from across the World elected as the 2017 cohort of fellows of academy.


 India Organized Festival in Egypt to mark Tagore’s birth anniversary

India will organise Tagore Cultural Festival in Egypt to mark the 156th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore from May 8 – 12. Tagore Cultural Festival will be organised by the Maulana Azad centre of Indian Culture (MACIC) which is the cultural wing of the Indian Embassy in Cairo. As a part of the festival, a dance drama based on Tagore’s work called “Chitrangada” will be performed by the Kolkata based Dancers Guild.


 First Woman Chief Judge of State High Court, Leila Seth Passes Away

Justice Leila Seth, the first woman Judge of Delhi High Court, passed away on 6 May, 2017 after a brief illness in Uttar Pradesh. She was 86. Seth was the first woman to have topped the London Bar Exam, first woman judge of Delhi High Court and also the first woman Chief Justice of a State High Court of Himachal Pradesh. She was one of Three members of Justice verma Committee which was constituted in 2012 to recommend amendments to criminal law.
