The UN General Assembly has approved Chile’s former President Michelle Bachelet as the next UN human rights chief by consensus. Bachelet has been a victim of human rights abuses herself and is also a fierce advocate for women’s rights.

Nobel Prize-winning British author V S Naipaul has died at the age of 85. Vidiadhar Surajprasad Naipaul who was born in Trinidad wrote more than 30 books and won the Nobel Literature Prize in 2001.
