IMF forecasted Indian Economic Growth Rate to be 5.9 percent in 2013
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on 23 January 2013 pegged India's economic growth rate in 2013 at 5.9 per cent and projected a higher growth of 6.4 per cent next year in line with the gradual strengthening of global expansion.
Lalith Babu takes top honours
Lalith Babu defeated Swapnil Dhopade in the final round to clinch the Chennai Super Kings International Grandmaster chess tournament that concluded at the Nehru Stadium in Chennai on 23 January 2013.Lalith Babu won Rs.200,000 and the trophy after becoming the first Indian player to claim the Chennai Open.
The King and Queen of Bhutan visit India
The King and Queen of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Jetsun Pema, visit India from 23-30 January. The Bhutanese heads of state are on a state visit as chief guests for India’s Republic Day parade. This is the fourth time since 1954 that a Bhutanese King will be a Chief Guest at India’s Republic Day celebrations.During his week-long visit, the King of Bhutan will meet President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and the United Progressive Alliance’s Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, among others.
Justice JS Verma Panel Report Submitted to the Government
Justice J.S. Verma committee, set up to recommend measures to improve laws dealing with sexual offences, had received around 80,000 suggestions and wrapped up its work within 29 days.Justice Verma, the head of the three-member panel, was approached by the Central government for the task on December 23. The other members of the panel are former Himachal Pradesh Chief Justice Leila Seth and former Solicitor General Gopal Subramaniam.The Justice Verma panel recognised failure of governance as primary cause of sexual crimes. The panel additionally criticised the police, government and also the public for the lack of interest and also recommended changes in the entire society.
