India, Japan to speed up talks on civil nuclear deal

On 29 May 2013,Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Japanese counterpart, Shinzo Abe decided to speed up talks on a civil nuclear deal to allow Japan to export nuclear reactors to India and to bolster maritime security cooperation at a time when China's postures in the seas of the regional have caused concerns. A joint statement issued at the end of exhaustive talks between Singh and Abe said the two Prime Ministers reaffirmed the importance of civil nuclear cooperation between the two countries, while recognising that nuclear safety is a priority for both governments. In this context, they directed their officials to accelerate the negotiations of an Agreement for Cooperation in the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy towards an early conclusion


Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Visited Japan

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited Japan from 27th to 29th May.During the visit Manmohan Singh attended the Japanese leadership meeting.In the visit Manmohan Singh presented Padma Shri to eminent Japanese Tamil language scholar Noboru Karashima for his outstanding contribution in the field of literature and education. Manmohan Singh met Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and discussed bilateral ties and issues of mutual interest. Both countries agreed to speed up talks on a deal to allow Japan to export nuclear plants and to strengthen security cooperation as both sides keep a wary eye on China's military clout.
