30 August: International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances

The International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances was observed across the world on 30 August 2017. The day was first observed in 2011 after a declaration by the United Nations General Assembly. The declaration followed the adoption of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Diappearance by the assembly on 20 December 2006.


Rajnath Singh inaugurates “YUVA-Skill Development Programme”

The Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has inaugurated “YUVA – Skill Development Programme”. YUVA is an initiative by Delhi Police under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana. The YUVA initiative by Delhi Police aims to connect with youth by upgrading their skill as per their competencies. The programme will help the youth to get a gainful employment under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) under the Union Ministry of Skill Development.


GST Collection for First Month at Rs 92,283 Crore

The goods and services tax, GST, launched on 1 July, has got off to a good start, with collections exceeding the revenue target for the first month. According to the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, taxes worth Rs 92,283 crore were collected in July from just 64.42 per cent of the total taxpayer base. The finance minister added that even after the compensation cess is excluded, the target will still be surpassed when all taxpayers file returns.


NITI Aayog Announced Winners of the Women Transforming India Awards 2017

NITI Aayog, in partnership with MyGov and the United Nations, announced the winners of the Women Transforming India Awards, 2017. Launched on International Women’s Day on 8 March, the contest aimed to gather lesser-own stories of women leading change. Government clears 100% strategic sale of CEL

The Union Government (Department of Investment and Public Asset Management) has approved a 100% disinvestment through strategic sale along with transfer of management control of Central Electronics Ltd. (CEL). CEL was incorporated as CPSE in 1974 under the administrative control of Ministry of Science and Technology. It is wholly owned by the government and has a net worth of Rs. 50.34 crore as on March 2017. The government is planning to engage an advisor from a consulting firm, investment banker or financial institution or merchant banker for providing advisory services and managing the disinvestment process.


No interview for Non-Gazetted posts in UP

The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to end the process of holding interview for selection of candidates for the government jobs in all the non-gazetted posts of Group B, C and D categories. The decision was made at at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adithyanath. The decision has been taken keeping in mind the system followed by the Government of India. however, for recruitment of gazetted officers in Class II category, Interview will be a must. this new rule will not be binding on the ongoing recruitment for Class II officers.


Sri Lankan Selection Committee headed by Sanath Jayasuriya Resigns

The Sanath Jayasuriya-led Sri Lankan cricket selection panel has stepped down in the wake of the country’s horrible performance against India. Sri Lanka suffered 3-0 defeat in the Test series and have already lost the five-match ODI series against Virat Kohli’s Indian cricket team. Sri Lanka Cricket vice-president Mohan de Silva has confirmed that Sanath Jayasuriya’s panel has indeed stepped down.


BSE Board approved another 5-year Term for Ashish Chauhan as CEO

Top stock exchange BSE’s board has approved another five-year term for its chief Ashish Chauhan. Chauhan has joined BSE as deputy chief executive officer (CEO) in 2009. He was made MD and CEO for a period of five years with effect from November 2, 2012. Mr. Chauhan will be BSE’s Managing Director and CEO  until November 1, 2022.


Indian Hotels Company appoints Puneet Chhatwal as MD and CEO

Tata group hospitality firm Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL) has appointed Duetsche Hospitality chief executive Puneet Chhatwal as its Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). He will take over from incumbent Rakesh Sarna, who is stepping down on 30 September. Before he joined IHCL, Sarna was the group president – Americas of Hyatt Hotels Corporation.


YouTube changes its Logo for the First Time

Google-owned YouTube has refreshed its iconic logo and introduced some major design changes to its desktop and mobile apps. Unlike minor tweaks, this is the biggest change the YouTube logo has received over the years. The logo ditches the red colour inside the “Tube” part of the name and places the now familiar play icon to the left side of the YouTube name.


Fourth Session of India-Tanzania Joint Trade Committee

The Fourth Session of India-Tanzania Joint Trade Committee (JTC) meeting was held in New Delhi. The Indian delegation was led by Minister of Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman and Tanzanian delegation was led by Charles John Mwijage, Minister for Industry, Trade and Investment. During the meeting both sides discussed potential areas of cooperation and agreed to enhance sectoral co-operation based on respective needs comparative advantage for mutual benefit.


Mohammad Mustafa takes charge as SIDBI chairman

Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) said Mohammad Mustafa has assumed office as the chairman and managing director. Prior to this, Mustafa was working as joint secretary in the department of financial services at the Centre. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved his appointment for a period of three years, according to a Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) order.


Indian Police wins record 321 medals at World Police & Fire Games

A 101-member Indian Police contingent has returned to country with record breaking haul of 321 medals including 151 Gold, 99 Silver and 71 Bronze medals at the World Police & Fire Games held in Los Angeles, Calfornia in USA. Indian Police contingent participated only in seven sport events i.e. Athletics, Archery, Wrestling , Boxing, Judo, Swimming and Shooting. It is a rarest of the rare occasion that each team member of India won a medal irrespective of individual or relay events in which they participated.
