1 October: International Day of Older Persons

The International Day of Older Persons is observed on October 1 every year. The theme for International Day of Older Persons 2016 is Take A Stand Against Ageism. The theme for the 2016 IDOP draws attention to and challenges negative stereotypes and misconceptions about older persons and ageing. Ageism is a widely prevalent and prejudicial attitude that stems from the assumption that age discrimination, and sometimes neglect and abuse of older persons is a social norm and therefore, acceptable. On December 14, 1990 the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons.


Black money worth Rs. 65,250 crore declared under Income Disclosure Scheme, 2016

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has received total disclosure of Rs. 65,250 crore black money in the form of cash and other assets under the Income Disclosure Scheme, 2016. The scheme launched in June 2016 has provided a one-time opportunity to those who had not paid full taxes in the past. It had provided four-month window for declaring undisclosed income or black money and ended on 30 September 2016. The scheme had provided a one-time opportunity to black money holders who had not paid full taxes in the past to come clean by declaring their domestic undisclosed income and assets.


Delhi Police launches Mobile App for senior citizens

The Delhi Police has launched a mobile application “Delhi Police Senior Citizen” for senior citizens to provide immediate assistance to them in distress. The facility was launched by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung at a function in New Delhi on the occasion of International Day of Older Persons (observed on October 1). The application has an SOS button integrated with a dedicated existing helpline for Senior Citizen – 1291. The app has been designed with features that allow users to press the SOS button in case of an emergency. The call will reach a dedicated station. If the user is unwell, an ambulance will be sent. In case for any other reason, a beat constable will be asked to contact the user.


Gangtok conferred Cleanest Tourist Destination honour

At a time when the Swachh Bharat Mission is in full swing, the Union Ministry of Tourism has conferred the Cleanest Tourist Destination on the Sikkim capital. The award was received by the Commissioner, GMC, from the Prime Minister. Chandigarh and Mysore were felicitated for ‘Clean Cities in million plus population category’ and Gangtok for ‘Cleanest Tourism Destination’.


Arundhati Bhattacharya gets a year’s extension as SBI chief

Arundhati Bhattacharya, who took over as Chairperson and Managing Director of the State Bank of India, and was due to retire in early October, has been granted a year’s extension. Bhattacharya, who took over as the first woman to head the country’s largest bank and an India-based Fortune 500company on October 7, 2013, had joined the bank in September 1977, as a probationary officer at age 22. She has held several positions during her 36-year career with the bank, including working in foreign exchange, treasury, retail operations, human resources and investment banking. She has been involved in the launch of several new businesses such as SBI General Insurance, SBI Custodial Services and the SBI Macquarie Infrastructure Fund.
