Sitar Maestro Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan passes away:

Renowned Sitar player Jaffer Khan died in Mumbai on 4th January after a brief period of illness. He was 88 years old. He belonged to the Indore gharana of music and was the founder of the style of music called “Jaffer Khani Baaj”. He has been conferred with the Padmashri, Padma Bhushan and Sangeet Natak akademi awards.


China launches first freight train to London:

People’s Republic of China launched its first freight train to London (UK) with the aim to improve trade ties and strengthen connectivity with Britain and Western Europe. The train departed from Yiwu West Railway station in eastern Zhejiang province of China. It will travel for 18 days over 12,000 before reaching London.


World Braille Day –  January 4:

The 4th of January is World  Braille day, as it is the birthday of Louis Braille, the French Man who invented the Braille code in 1821. Baille helps to provide equal opportunity for many blind people throughout the world. For about 200 years blind people have learned to read and write using braille. Braille is a tactile alphabet system of 6 dots in a 3×2 grid used to represent letters, numbers and symbols for most of the world’s languages.


Union Govt launches IPR Enforcement Toolkit for police:

The Union Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman launched on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Enforcement Toolkit for police. The  toolkit is jointly prepared by Cell for IPR  Promotion and Management (CIPAM) and Federation of  Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). It also lays down general guidelines for search and seizure in case of IP crimes.


Telangana, Assam join Uday discom debt scheme:

Telangana, Assam today joined MoU’s for being a part of the Ujwal Discom Assurance Yojana in a bid to better performance of state run power distribution companies. Speaking at the event, Union Power Minister, Piyush Goyal said, “An overall net benefit of approximately Rs.6,116 crore to Telangana and Rs.1,663 crore to Assam will come from joining the scheme.


India win record 4th straight SAFF Women’s Championship:

A dominant India defeated Bangladesh 3-1 to win their fourth consecutive SAFF Women’s Football Championship title at the Kanchenjunga Stadium in Siliguri, West Bengal. The Indian eves, in the process, are now unbeaten in 19 matches having own 18 and drawn one. Until now, India has own every edition of the Championship.


M.S. Dhoni steps down as Captain of T-20 & ODI:

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has informed the BCCI, that he wishes to step down as the captain of the Indian Cricket Team from the One Day Internationals (ODI’s) and Twenty-Twenty (T-20) Internationals formats of the game. He will be available for the selection for the one day and T-20 series against England and the same has been conveyed to the Senior Selection Committee. He was an outstanding contribution as the captain of the Indian Team across the world.
