New Zealand Won Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Tournament

New Zealand won the Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Tournament title for the second time on 12 April. In the final match, New Zealand defeated World Champions Australia by 3-1 goals in the penalty shoot-out. India won the bronze i.e. finished third by defeating South Korea by 4-1 goals in the penalty shoot-out after both the teams were tied at 2-2 at regulation time.


Retired Lieutenant General Hanut Singh Died

Lieutenant General Hanut Singh (retd), the recipient of the Mahavir Chakra and hero of 1971 Indo-Pak war, was died in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. He was 82. He commanded the 17 Horse, or the Poona Horse regiment in the 1971 Indo-Pak war. He was honoured with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) and the Maha Vir Chakra (MVC). He retired from the Army in 1991. Lt. Gen. Singh, who was a cousin of former union minister Jaswant Singh, was born in the year 1933 in Jasol in Rajasthan’s Barmer district.


Sania Mirza Is First Indian To Be World No.1 In Women’s Doubles

Sania Mirza created history on 12 April  when she became the first female tennis player from India to achieve the world number one rank in doubles. She achieved this feat after winning WTA Family Circle Cup along with her Swedish partner Martina Hingis. With this win Sania scored 470 points, making her tally to 7965 and surpassing Italy’s Sara Errani (7640) and Roberta Vinci (7640) to the number one rank in the ranking table.


Lewis Hamilton Won The Chinese Formula One Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes team won the Chinese Formula One (F1) Grand Prix on 12 April. With this win, reigning world champion Hamilton took his second victory of the season and his fourth at Chinese GP.
