16 September: International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer

The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer was proclaimed as 16 September in 1994 by the UN General Assembly. The day was selected to commemorate the signing of the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer. The theme for Ozone Day 2016 is ‘Ozone and climate: Restored by a world united’. It recognises the collective efforts of the parties to the Vienna convention and the Montreal Protocol towards the restoration of the ozone layer.


Government notifies GST Council

Government has formally notified the GST Council, which will decide on the tax rate, exempted goods and the threshold under the new taxation regime. The council will be chaired by Union Finance Minister and have Minister in charge of Finance or Taxation or any other Minister nominated by each State Government as its member. Also Minister of State in charge of Revenue or Finance at the Centre would be a member. The first meeting of the GST Council will be held on September 22-23.


Andhra Pradesh tops in attracting industrial investments

Andhra Pradesh has emerged on the top among all other states in attracting industrial investments in 2015-16, pushing the previous year’s topper Maharashtra to the third spot. Andhra Pradesh attracted an investment of Rs 21,914 crore out of the Rs 1,38,700 crore gross investments across India, the state government said in an official release, quoting a report by the Reserve Bank of India. This was 15.8% of the total investments of over Rs 10 crore each unit. In 2014-15, AP’s share in the country’s investments was 8.1%.


Telangana signs MoU to help Goa in IT development

The Telangana government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Goa government to help the latter in information technology (IT) development. The Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar and Telangana IT minister K T Rama Rao signed an MoU and decided to work together in IT development. Through this MoU, Telangana will help the Goa government in formulating relevant policies. An outpost of T-Hub (Telangana Hub) will be set up in Goa.


V K Sharma gets additional charge as LIC chairman

V K Sharma, who is currently one of the two managing directors at Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), has taken additional charge as Chairman, LIC of India. He will take the place of S K Roy who has been relieved of his duties. As per the LIC Act, the insurer can have four MDs, and a chairman, as part of its top management.


Atul Kumar Goel takes charges as ED in UBI

Atul Kumar Goel, General Manager, Allahabad Bank, has taken charge as Executive Director (ED) in Union Bank of India (UBI). The Central Government appointed Goel though a notification dated September 15. The appointment is for a period of 3 years. Union Bank of India is one of the largest government-owned banks of India.


Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma conferred with Arjuna Award

Cricketers Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma were conferred with the Arjuna Award for this year and the previous year respectively by Sports Minister Vijay Goel for their contributions to sport of cricket. Rahane and Rohit could not earlier receive the Arjuna Awards from the President of India, as they were participating in international tournaments. The awardees are given a statuette, a certificate, ceremonial dress and prize money of Rs 5 lakh.
