China, Russia conduct joint naval exercises Joint Sea-2016 in South China Sea

China and Russia have carried out joint naval exercises dubbed as Joint Sea-2016 in the resource-rich South China Sea (SCS) off China’s southern Guangdong province. The exercises follow a spike in tensions after Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague rejected China’s claims in the SCS and slammed it for causing environmental damage there. The eight-day naval exercises (from September 13 to 19) were held in a non-disputed area in SCS off China’s southern Guangdong province. It had featured surface ships, missile destroyer, anti-submarine vessels, missile frigates, ship-based helicopters and conventional submarines among others from both navies.


Union Government notifies new import policy for marble & travertine blocks

Union Government has notified new import policy for marble & travertine blocks with effect from October 1, 2016. The policy aims to balance the interests of domestic consumers, producers and processors, and ease the system for import of marble & travertine blocks. It ends the quantitative restriction on the import of marble and travertine blocks. It also ends the cumbersome and restrictive import licensing system. The Minimum Import Price (MIP) for marble blocks has been reduced to 200 US dollar per metric ton. To address the interest of domestic producers, the basic customs duty on import of marble and travertine blocks has been increased from 10% to 40 %.


Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar declares Charkhi Dadri as 22nd district

Haryana Government has announced Charkhi Dadri as the 22nd district of the state. At present, it is part of Bhiwani, the state’s largest district carved out on December 22, 1972. It was announced by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar at a public rally in Dadri in Bhiwani district. The new district will have two state assembly constituencies Dadri and Badhra under its jurisdiction.


Indian shooter Subhankar Pramanick wins gold at ISSF Junior World Cup

Young Indian shooter Subhankar Pramanick has won the gold medal at the ISSF Junior World Cup for pistol, rifle and shotgun in Gabala, Azerbaijan. He won the gold medal in 50-metre rifle prone event with overall 205.5 score to finish top of the podium. Czech Republic’s Filip Nepejchal (205.2) followed in second position, while Romania’s Dragomir Iordache (185.1) was placed third at the end of the finals. India’s Sambhaji Patil also had won second gold medal when he won the junior men’s 25-metre standard pistol event by shooting 562 score. He also has added the team gold medal in the event along with compatriots Gurmeet and Rituraj Singh.


Punjab National Bank appointed Virat Kohli as its new brand ambassador

State-owned Punjab National Bank has roped in Indian test skipper Virat Kohli as brand ambassador to improve its image which has taken a hit due to rising bad loans. Since its inception in 1895, PNB has been people’s bank serving millions of customers throughout India.
