Kerala To Set Up Committee To Respond To Centre on Western Ghats Report

The Kerala Government on 21 October decided to form an expert committee to prepare the State’s response on the recommendations of the Madhav Gadgil and Kasturi Rangan panels on protecting biodiversity in the Western Ghats. Western Ghats are spread over six states, including Kerala.Union Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) on 18 October 2013 approved a proposal for Western Ghats development prepared by K Kasturirangan-led panel. The Union Forest and Environment Ministry (MoEF) had also sought the State’s response on the matter.


Justice Mohapatra Sworn in as Judge of Manipur High Court

Justice Laxmi Kanta Mohapatra , a former judge of the Allahabad High Court, was on 21 October sworn-in as a judge of Manipur High Court.The post of chief justice of High Court of Manipur remained vacant after the first chief justice Abhay M Sapre was transferred as chief justice of the Gauhati High Court.North eastern states, Tripura, Meghalaya and Manipur on 23 March 2013 got their own High Courts. Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre, Judge of Chhattisgarh High Court took is the first Chief Justice of Manipur High Court.With the opening of the three high Courts in the North Eastern states of India, the total number of high Courts in India has gone up to 24 from previous 21.
