21 September: International Day of Peace

The International Day of Peace is observed across the world on 21 September every year to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. Significance: The International Day of Peace acknowledges the efforts of those who have strived to end conflict and promote peace. This day is also observed as a day of ceasefire. The theme for International Day of Peace 2016 is “The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace”. To inaugurate the day, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon rung the United Nations Peace Bell at UN Headquarters in New York City. The bell has inscription on its side reading “Long live absolute world peace“. The bell has been casted from coins donated by children from all continents except Africa. It was given as gift from the United Nations Association of Japan as a reminder of the human cost of war.


India, US, Afghanistan reaffirm shared interest in combating terrorism

India, United States and Afghanistan have reaffirmed their shared interests in combating terrorism and advancing peace and security in the region. In this regard, a trilateral statement was issued after meeting of their delegates in New York on the sidelines of the 71st session of UN General Assembly. Three countries reaffirm their shared interests in advancing peace and security in the region, as well as countering terrorism. They have exchanged views on the situation in Afghanistan and on regional issues of mutual interest.


Nation world’s largest solar power plant in TN

Adani Green Energy (Tamil Nadu) Ltd, part of the Adani Group has dedicated to the nation the world’s largest solar power plant of 648 megawatts (MW), set up at Kamuthi in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu. The plant has been set up with an investment of around Rs. 4,550 crore. It is part of the state government’s target to generate 3,000 MW in line with its new solar energy policy unveiled in 2012. The company sourced equipment and machinery from various parts of the world to set up the 648 MW capacity within a record time of 8 months.


Delhi’s Race Course Road renamed as Lok Kalyan Marg

Delhi’s Race Course Road has now been renamed as Lok Kalyan Marg. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence is located on this road. A decision to this effect was taken at a high-level meeting of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), presided by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The NDMC also decided to rename the Gurdwara Rakabganj round-about adjacent to the Parliament complex as Guru Gobind Singh Chowk.


Mukesh Ambani tops Forbes’ 100 Richest Indians list

Forbes India has released the annual India rich list and Reliance Industries’ Chairman Mukesh Ambani has topped the Forbes’ ‘100 Richest Indians’ list. India’s richest pharmaceutical magnate Dilip Shanghvi remains at number 2. Taking the 3rd spot are the Hinduja brothers. Tech magnate Azim Premji, who has led Wipro for five decades, slips one spot to No 4 on the list. Construction magnate Pallonji Mistry takes the 5th spot and the steel baron Lakshmi Mittal ranks to number 6th. Taking the 7th spot is the Godrej Family and Indian tech pioneer Shiv Nadar, cofounder of HCL Group has secured 8th rank. Kumar Mangalam Birla comes in at 9th spot and Cyrus Poonawalla is the 10th richest Indian with a net worth of USD 8.6 billion.


Dhoni named captain of India’s all-time Test XI by Wisden

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been named the captain of the all-time India Test XI chosen by cricket magazine Wisden. Dhoni has received the honours ahead of Sourav Ganguly and Mohammad Azharuddin. The celebrated team has been picked ahead of India’s 500th Test which will be played against New Zealand in Kanpur.
