Vajpayee, Madan Mohan Malaviya To Be Awarded Bharat Ratna

The President’s Office on 24 December announced the Bharat Ratna award to Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya (posthumously) and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The announcement was made on the eve of Mr. Vajpayee’s 90th birthday and the 153rd birth anniversary of Pandit Malviya. In 2013, the award was conferred to cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and scientist C.N.R Rao.


Omar Abdullah Resigns As Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister

Omar Abdullah, who on 24 December resigned as Chief Minister indicated that his National Conference could play a part in government formation in Jammu and Kashmir after the election threw up a hung assembly. In 2014 Jammu & Kashmir Assembly election, Omar Abdullah lost in Sonawar assembly constituency in Srinagar. Abdullah lost the Sonawar seat by 14,277 votes. However, he won the Beerwah seat in Kashmir.


National Consumers Right Day was Observed On 24 December

National Consumers Right Day was observed across India on 24 December 2014. On this day the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 had received the assent of the President. The enactment of this Act was considered as a historic milestone in the consumer movement in the country. This Act aims to provide consumers with effective safeguards against different types of exploitation such as defective goods, unsatisfactory services and unfair trade practices. This day provides an opportunity for individuals to highlight the importance of the consumer movement and the need to make every consumer more aware of their rights and responsibilities. It should be also noted that World Consumer Rights Day is observed on 15th March every year.
