IIT-Kanpur professor Sanjay Mittal Awarded 2015 GD Birla Award

IIT-Kanpur professor Sanjay Mittal has been awarded the twenty-fifth GD Birla Award for Scientific Research for the year 2015. He has been bestowed with this award for his significant contributions have been in the area of Mechanics. Sanjay Mittal is a Professor of computational fluid dynamics in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at IIT-Kanpur. He also has worked in the area of sports aerodynamics.


Anil Kumble Appointed As Indian Cricket Team’s Head Coach

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed former spinner Anil Kumble as the head coach of Indian Cricket Team. He will have tenure of one year. In his 18 years (from 1990 to 2008) of cricket career, he had played 132 Tests and 271 One Day Internationals (ODIs) matches. Till date, he is India’s highest wicket-taker (1136 wickets). In his career, he had taken 619 test wickets and 337 ODI wickets At international level, he is the 3rd highest wicket-taker in Test cricket after Muttiah Muralidaran (800 wickets) and Shane Warne (708 wickets). He is only the second bowler after England’s Jim Laker in Test cricket to take 10 wickets in an innings. He had achieved this feat in a test match against Pakistan in 1999 in Delhi. He was appointed Chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee in 2012 and still holds the position.


UK Prime Minister David Cameron Resigns After Brexit Vote 

The Prime Minister of United Kingdom David Cameron on 24 June announced his resignation hours after the Brexit vote that favoured leaving the European Union (EU). During the campaign, Cameron-led Conserve Party advocated for remaining with the EU. In the referendum that was held on 23 June 2016, 51.89 percent of the voters preferred to leave the EU.


“Pioneer of Indian Quizzing Neil O’Brien Died”

Neil O’Brien, a pioneer of quizzing in India and leader of the Anglo-Indian community, died in Kolkata on 24 June. He was 82. A former member of Lok Sabha, Neil O’Brien was also a three-time nominated Anglo-Indian MLA in West Bengal and an educationist. His son Derek O’Brien is an Indian television personality and Member of Parliament for All India Trinamool Congress. He conducted the first well-organized, formal quiz in 1967 at Christ the King Church Parish Hall in Calcutta.
