Kidambi Srikanth wins 2016 Syed Modi Badminton Title

“Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth won the Men’s Singles title of the 2016 Syed Modi International Badminton Championships on 31 January 2016. In the final match Srikanth defeated China’s Huang Yuxiang at Babu Banarasi Das Indoor Stadium in Lucknow.This was Srikanth’s fifth title. Srikanth’s other four titles are Thailand Grand Prix Gold, China Super Series premier, Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold and India Super Series.

Women’s Singles: Korean Sung Ji Hyun defeated Sayako Sato of Japan.
Men’s Doubles: Malaysian pair of Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong defeated Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Akshay Dewalkar of India.
Women’s Doubles: Korean duo of Jung Kyung Eun and Shin Seung Chan defeated Eefje Muskens and Selena Piek of Netherlands.
Mixed doubles: Indonesian pair of Praveen Jordan and Debby Susanto defeated Puavaranukroh Dechapol and Sapsiree Taerattanchai of Thailand.”


Novak Djokovic defeats Andy Murray to win sixth Australian Open title

World Number One Novak Djokovic won the Australian Open Men’s Singles title on 31 January 2016. In the final match played at Melbourne, the Serbian defeated the Andy Murray of Britain. With this, Djokovic retained his title and also equalled the record of Roy Emerson’s record of six Australian Open Singles titles. Djokovic claimed his 11th grand slam title to match the totals of Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg. Earlier on 30 January 2016, Germany’s Angelique Kerber won the Australian Open Women’s Singles title by defeating defending champion Serena Williams. This was maiden Grand Slam Tennis title for 7th seed Kerber.


Aditya Mehta wins 83rd Senior National Snooker Championship

Aditya Mehta won the 83rd Senior National Snooker Championship on 31 January 2016 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. He defeated Manan Chandra in the final match. In another event, Vidya Pillai won the National Snooker Championship in the women’s category by defeating Amee Kamani. For 38-year-old Vidya, it was her ninth national title. The women’s billiards title was won by 19-year old Keerath Bhandaal by defeating Arantxa Sanchis of Maharashtra.


British broadcaster Terry Wogan passed away

British television and radio personality Terry Wogan died on 31 January 2016 due to cancer. He was 77. Irish-born Wogan, one of the BBC’s most recognizable faces and voices, was granted a British knighthood in 2005. Wogan began his broadcasting career with Irish state broadcaster RTE before joining the BBC in 1966. He went on to become a national institution as a disc jockey, chat show host and presenter, known for his gently mocking wit and Irish brogue. He hosted the BBC’s coverage of the Eurovision Song Contest from 1980 to 2008.
