Liberia Declared Ebola Free By UN Health Agency

The United Nations health agency on 9 May declared Liberia Ebola-free, hailing the monumental achievement in the west African country where the virus has killed more than 4,700 people. A total of 11,005 people have died from Ebola in Liberia, neighbouring Guinea and Sierra Leone.


Smita Purushottam Appointed India’s Ambassador To Switzerland

Smita Purushottam,a 1980 batch IFS officer has been appointed India’s Ambassador to Switzerland. Purushottam is currently serving as Ambassador to Venezuela. She is expected to take up her new assignment soon.


Arvind Saxena Appointed as UPSC Member

Arvind Saxena, in-charge of Aviation and Research Centre of external snooping agency RAW, was appointed as a member of UPSC becoming the first officer of 32-year Research and Analysis Service to be named to the commission. After the appointment of Saxena, who was due to retire in August, Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is left with only one vacancy. The UPSC is a 10-member body besides a Chairperson.


North Korea Successfully Test Fired Underwater Ballistic Missile

North Korea successfully conducted underwater test-fire of a newly developed Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM). This successful test indicates the progress in the secretive state’s pursuit of building missile-equipped submarines which is described as a world level strategic weapon. This underwater ballistic missile is capable of striking and wiping out hostile forces in any waters.
